as you might/might not know, brasilia is sort of a mecca for architecture nerds

as you might/might not know, brasilia is sort of a mecca for architecture nerds (such as, well, me). a modernist mid-century city carved out of the jungle by oscar niemeyer in the late 50's.

brasilia is unique as a modern city, in that it was almost completely conceptualized, originally, by niemeyer and a few other architects and city planners. in fact, one of the reasons we're playing a show tonight in brasilia is due to my architectural nerdiness (when the original tour was proposed i suggested, 'how about brasilia?' so that i could see the neimeyer buildings in person). so, like every other architecture nerd, i had to take pictures of some of niemeyers more iconic brasilia buildings.

Brasilia 1

Brasilia 2

Braslia 3

Brasilia 4

i have to say, the palacio de congress in person really is one of the most beautiful collection of buildings i've ever seen. maybe i'll go out tomorrow, as we have a day off, and take some more niemeyer pictures.

moby

i traveled miles just so i can see you

i'm from campo grande-ms and i traveled over 700 miles just so i can see you in brasília... and worth it! the show was amazing, extraordinary... unforgettable!!!

I didn't knew you are architecture nerd :)..that's great :)

Brasília

Your show was fantastic, but I'll have to say you'd like to play on the first edition of the festival. Look the picture. Next time you come here, check the interior of the Chatedral.

didn't know.

No I didn't know about the architecture there. What a great building.... reminds me of the Twin Towers..... and an open bowl placed on both sides. Must be amazing up close. Oh and very cute photo of yourself!!!!!! ; )

Brasília!

Hola, Moby!

projection

and what about the cover of your cd projected in one of these buildings? ... THAT was great!!! ... i have some pictures of it http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=20415&id=100000013441698&ref=mf

Are you going to DJ at São Paulo

Hey Moby,

I really liked to listen to your radio show at OI FM, but it seems that since february it was cancelled :0(
Will you dj at any club in São Paulo?
It would be great to hear one of your setlists again... they were oddly, and greatly, strange :0)
Cheers!

Wicked gig

Thanks for coming to our city... the gig was just amazing last Saturday!!! We couldn't believe when the concert was announced and it was indeed a great present for Brasilia's 50th anniversary.

Brasilia is the city to be in the next couple of years as we will be one of the cities hosting world cup games in 2014, so maybe you could come back anytime in the future.

By the way, thanks for the surprising version of "whole lotta love"... wicked!

Obrigado, Moby.

Speaking as an architect and city planning nerd....

Although beautiful in the eye of some viewers, Brasilia is a notorious example of why architects are so scrutinized and dismissed today. Niemeyer is an old-school, modernist architect that believed in architecture as monument/sculpture to be adored by the masses. It was an era of architecture intended to reform the way people used buildings. These forms did not follow function; rather the inverse was expected of the users. We are still working hard to recover ourselves and our profession from this reckless era of ego inflating narcissism.

porto alegre

hi there, you must go at the museum of Ibere Camargo in porto alegre, its a beatifull building, of the great architect Alvaro Siza from portugal or Spaña i cant remember by now... its totally white, and have a ver nice view from the bay of porto alegre, a perfect hour to go its at 5.30 p.m. and so you can see the sunset of the contemporary windows nicely projected to see the sunset with the long extention of whatter from the bay. i cant take you there to, im studying architectur and i can give a class whith the subject: museum Ibere Camargo. (hehehe) still having a nice trip

Beautiful but no functional

Is what we know about Niemeyer Buildings - they are amazing, but no functional. When you work in some buildings of this picture, you go crazy about that... ; )

The buildings do not have any type of insulation and cook us like a microwave, in the middle of desert climate (in Brasilia), forcing us to turn the air conditioning every day.. and they dont have watter supply. When it rains, we'll swim to the entrance, because there is no covered walkway.

Have a lot of problems, that we here suffer a lot! They are not green, do not use renewable energy at all. But they look great, yeah.

By the way, moby's show was amazing, and bigger than ANY Niemeyer building, with sure. Thank's a lotttt man!

The bad notice is the Bodyrock literally rock my body, and i'm in recovering... heheheh!

Hugs from Brasilia, and go vegan ; )

Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói

MAC, as it's usually referred to, is a museum of Contemporary Art located in Niterói (just across Rio's bay) and... it's like a five minutes walk from my home!

so if you need someone to guide you around... LOL

see you in São Paulo and Rio! can't wait! :D

cheers!
Tatiana

here it is:

here it is: http://www.macniteroi.com.br/?op=omac

i guess i'll just stand there next Sunday waiting for you to come. ;p
just kidding, i'm not the stalker type.

Beauty must have function...

Your photos are beautiful. I cannot help to note the typical american-esque boundary tape behind you. Architecture is only as beautiful as its function. If it is meant to be sculpture, then is should lay alone in desolation. If it is architecture, it should inherently hold both form and function.

PLEASE TAKE MORE PICTURES!!!!!

I was so happy with your pictures, it means a lot for most of us, archinerds!!!ahah, don´t be scare. I´m not a freak fan, i just wanted to tell you if you enjoy Niemeyer's architecture and you go to Rio, please don't miss

the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói,

i think you would love it, the view of the 'bahia' is incredible and it's like an alien's house - space ship.

By the way Oscar is still working... awesome!!!
Good trip!!!
