there is something really, really nice about playing acoustic guitar and working on music in a canyon while looking at trees and mountains
making acoustic record, update #2 (or 3, i can't remember) - there is something really, really nice about playing acoustic guitar and working on music in a canyon while looking at trees and mountains. but this canyon idyll is not without its dangers. to wit: warning: it's possible that i will become a hippie. well, a hippie minus the long hair. as i don't have hair. well, to be clear, i don't have hair on the top of my head where it would be useful. i have hair on my face and it grows like a weed. or weeds.
in any case, i'm here working on an acoustic version of 'when it's cold i'd like to die', and trying to figure out if it should be just acoustic guitar and vocals, whether i should sing on it, whether someone else should sing on it, and/or whether it should have a solo violin or cello or a string quartet or something more orchestral. i like the austerity and vulnerability of keeping it as minimal as possible, but i also really love more elaborate orchestral arrangements. and a hummingbird just flew by my window.
maybe i should go walk around hollywood blvd and look at the tourists and the junkies to counteract my slow descent into hippie-dom. i'm headed back to nyc in a few days, that should knock the hippie out of me for a while. here's a picture of me with a microphone sticking into my head. you'll notice there's a piece of bark nailed to the wall behind me.

New to the Moby site.....
Just checking in and want you to know the music you produce is important! You are the creative force that is missing! Look forward to your next album/blog/photo/artwork/thoughts etc.!
I really like your voice a lot so, yes, do use it there...
Hey Moby,
I was just going to tell you that I really like your voice a lot and that it would be good if your next album could feature more of your own vocals.
Although I really like the music on 'Wait For Me' too, I was actually a bit disappointed when I very first heard it that there was only one song on it featuring your vocals.
I've read various bits and pieces that you've written about your own voice - to the effect of saying that you don't have a great singing voice, which I think is sad because from the point of view of having heard quite a bit of it on previous albums of yours, I think you've got a very nice voice.
An all acoustic album from you including ochestral instruments sounds like something amazing. Good on you for being so experimental!!
.
mad will can't wait to hear the aucustic version :)
I was raised by Hippies ;' P
My mother was a hippie so I always had a variety of people in and out of my life. As far as the song goes I'm with you, I'm 100 percent confused. I like the simple, almost sweet melancholy sound of the original but I also like the thought of a more intense orchestral version.
Either way I like the idea of the violin being added. If done right it could add a lot more life and imagination into the song. Give us some samples of what you are working on some time and I'll let you know my opinion of what works best. I'm still so excited that it's the song I've recently fallen in love with that you are working on!
I've never gotten a chance to give input directly to the artist before. It makes me feel important in the creative process which is really cool. I went on a school field trip to some botanical garden once in 7th grade I believe, and there was a painter out at the front using the view to his advantage. It was wonderful just watching him.
I wanted to stay there all day. Then one of the teachers kept hounding me to get back in line. If I could have I would have stayed there all day and just watched him create in silence. It is so brilliant to watch an artist at work. Another artist I met taught me something I still carry with me. He told me that it is better to leave the mistakes you make than to erase and start over.
He made the argument that you can not erase and start over in life and that art is very much the same. Our mistakes become apart of the grander picture that makes up our character. My point is that it is always inspiring to be involved in the creation of another artists work even if it is by silent observation. I have just gone on and on... anyway, thank you again for sharing this journal with your fans!!!

Moby ---Get off Yer High Horse
Stop being a limousine liberal, and accept that SCOTT BROWN just PWNED the ENTIRE Democrap machine in Massachusetts.
Maybe if yer gal, Martha Croakley, knew how to spell Massachusetts---she wouldn't have lost touch with the voters of that state.
Now go make some of your meandering beats---it'z ALL YER GOOD AT!!!!!
When it´s cold I´d like to have a shave
Moby´s stubble has grown intensivly these past days. I do hope he intend to have a shave before the whole record is finished...
On another note, I think Moby should do the vocals himself, only accompanied by the piano.
When it's cold I'd like to die
I think strings are the perfect sound to go with the frailty of the song's voice and lyrics, whether it is a single crisp violin or a whole orchestra arrangement. But then, wouldn't it be great to have the lonely voice+violin evolve into a whole orchestral bridge or interlude, then leaving the lonely alone again? I shiver just to think of it. Anyway, just daydreaming, you'll find your way ;-)
Love, Álex.
Sweet Nectar
I am the hummingbird that just flew by Moby's window, and alas, I can indeed verify he does not have any hair atop his head. But what I wouldn't give for a taste of that sweet nectar that oozes from his brain, creating all this deliciously wonderful music and whatnot.
