it's 3 a.m and i'm thinking about: (caveat: most of these things have been thought about by lots of people way smarter than i, so don't expect too much novelty here, unfortunately...).

a an 80 million year old bone is ancient. but 80 million years in the time-line of the universe is so short as to be almost nothing. so if 80 million years is nothing then what does that make 40 years? 15,000,000,000 years (the age of the universe, apparently) vs. 80,000,000 years (age of many fossils) vs. 40 years (age of me, roughly)

b we live on a big planet. but our planet is quite small in comparison to our sun. and our sun is quite small in comparison to other suns in our galaxy. and there are 200,000,000,000 suns in the milky way. and the milky way is one small galaxy. and there are 100,000,000,000 galaxies, supposedly. and most galaxies are incalculably far from each other. and most of the quanta in the universe isn't visible or even, seemingly, identifiable.

c the paradox of humans. we are young. rarely do we live to be older than 100 years. a human who is 100 years old has lived a long, long life. but 100 years in the time-line of the universe counts as less than 1/1,000,000,000,000th of a second. the first billion years of the universe nothing happened, stuff just floated around. for a billion years. for 4 billion years on earth cells just floated around in the seas. so 100 years? 1/1,000,000,000th of a gnat blinking it's eyes, in universal terms. but one minute is a long time to me, sometimes. and 100 years is a long time, subjectively. so, the paradox. or paradoxes.

1 we're short lived but we're solely comprised of the matter/energy that was at the beginning of the universe 15,000,000,000 years ago.

2 we have mastered amazing quantum feats(lightbulbs, dvd's, metallurgy, etc.)and invariably use them for utterly mundane purposes(lighting the deli case where they keep the mayonnaise, watching 'meet the fokkers', wrapping a ham in aluminum foil, etc).

3 compared to the universe we are tiny, but we are comprised of quanta that are so tiny that we can't even comprehend them (atoms, molecules, even smaller quanta). and within the tiniest quanta are distances (between electrons, for example) that are so great that we can't actually conceive of them. and that's where matter resides, in ineffable quanta space. so within our tiny-ness are further levels of smallness that we can't possibly conceive of. and within that smallness are distances that are almost immeasurable.

d are we as humans capable of understanding any sort of significance either transcending or involving us? or are we just weird bio-buses, shuttling bacteria and quanta around for a little while until some new creation comes along to shuttle it around a bit differently? is there significance to life? to matter? to energy? to time? to existence? to the universe? if we're in any way capable of understanding any sort of significance, how in fact do we go about trying to understand? deprivation? excess? meditation? worldliness? prayer? psilocybin? death? disco?

e what's on the other side of a black hole? if it sucks up everything, where does it go? what if black holes just keep sucking and compressing until there are only 2 black holes and one sucks up the other and then the remaining black hole sucks up itself and is then the repository of every bit of energy and quanta that the universe has ever known and it becomes a singular dense point and then explodes, thus creating a new universe all over again?

this is why sometimes it's better to go to sleep early, rather than stay up until 3 a.m pondering a bunch of unanswerables. all answers welcome.

Hey Moby, i don't know if you'll ever read this. But what the heck. I'm you'r average teenager living in Northern Ireland. Like you, i'm very into punk. However, i find your music extremely emotional and moving. It has inspired me in lots of ways. Especially to help broaden my musical horizons. You also helped me politically. I myslef, pretty much have quite leftist ideals. Unfortunatelty due to the compicated history of my country, it is very hard to express any political opinion without being criticised. So for now, im gonna stay away from that and enjoy life. Thanks very much Moby. You've made such a positive change for me. oh yea. could you please write back. i'm sure you're busy but here's my email: rickb1748@hotmail.co.uk

Very special, good, fantastic news from Belgium

I will leave you my e-mail address: mildred367@yahoo.it
I hope you will contact me, so I could send you some stuff I like and write openly.

if you'll do it, you'll make me happy!

and there's a good reason to make me happy since the 21st is my birthday hahahah

dear moby

I'm sure you're a very intelligent man, so i'd like to share some thoughts with you on a very interesting issue: God. I'm not a believer, but I have to accept the possibility of His existence. However, here are some philosophies that make it hard for me to accept it:

In Christian belief, God has four main qualities: omnipotency, omnipresence, omniscience and "summum bonum" (omnibenevolence). However, this definition contains some internal contradictions: One is the well-known problem of evil: if God is sooo good, so why is there so much evil things in this world? (some people answer that God is letting this happen because it will lead to a better future, but, if He is omnipotent, why doesn't He create an easier way to do that, implying less suffering? Plus, some people say it's a punishment for Man's actions. And what I say is: Oh, so that hungry innocent children dying every minute are dying for a good reason!); Other contradiction is a very funny one, indeed, but not less relevant(I think it was firstly proposed by Einstein): If God is omnipotent, He obviously could create a stone that is so heavy that God Himself couldn't hold it (if He can't hold it, He's not omnipotent). Cool, isn´t it?

Other problem concerns to Creation: If God created everithing, so who, or what, created God?

In a World where scientific thought reigns, does it make sense to think about God in a way that is so "scienceless"? I mean, if the concept of God is (from the perspective of the human, rudimentary logic) logically contradictory, is His existence still possible?
The truth is that science doesn´t need God to explain most of the world we know (although big bang, consciousness, etc. still lack explanation). And, if God is real, shouldn't He Himself have a scientific explanation?

Moby, i'd like to know what's your perspective about it. You can send me an answer to believethetruth_x@sapo.pt

pssssst

I left u a msg on your tennessee williams post....

dear moby

i may be very wrong, and over-simplifying...you are asking questions about yr self, not about the universe. and no, you won't live forever- nor will any of us (in our current familiar form anyway)...the best we can hope for is make something matter in this tiny scope of our capacity...you do that for many people- all the time. And you inspire others to do the same.

Lame answer, if any answer at-all...but gratitude prevails :) we outta keep making love possible.

To combat my own sleepless

To combat my own sleepless nights, I have ordered this dvd set, called The Universe from the history channel. I was always taken by the fact that at the end of the day, we all look up at the same moon, our ex, our friends and enemies, we're all literally held together by the same moon's gravity. Now, almost ever night, I pop in a dvd and watch how scientists and great thinkers try to piece together our excistence to make some sense. I always knew of my own insignificance, most people forget how small we are though. Knowing there are billions of other galaxies out there, I am positive someone else is out there. Makes me feel less lonely too.
I wondered, if there are other galaxies, why can't we just GO THERE to see the other life? Ohh...I didn't think that through...it would take us millions of years to get there. Our closest galaxy, Andromeda is just getting our first TV signals that were sent out into space about 100 years ago..

I like to try and think about this. It's a lot to take in for our sort of limited mind. only like 2 percent of the universe is made of mass, of planets and dirt, the other is just space, brain and heart start to hurt when you think of that. Just space..and its expanding too, always.. just feel even smaller and more fragile then i already do when thinking about it all. And then doing something so seemingly senseless like getting up in the morning is even harder!

Endlessness

I guess the universe is a description of endlessness.
Or eternity, like: An eternity of endless boring days have passed since the moby boards closed down on December 29th, 2008.

what about it?

philosophic minute

i haven't an answer, that would be pretentious to say the contrary..
however, i think reality is made by our mind. what we call reality is an idea of reality. the image of reality is built by our mind.
our mind is used to compare and class things by size, age, or shape.. so we understand our environment by analysis.. because we only use our intellingence to understand.. i think it's not the unique way.. our mind makes too much noise (sometimes, it prevents you sleeping).. if you try to stop the work of your brain, so you can hear your heart.. it tells you that there is no time, no space, no tiny or big things.. there is only you.. you are in the universe and the universe is in you.. you are the universe.. and me too.

that was my philosophic minute
now i go to eat chocolate

somehow

I just think that when you face this matter you should erase from your mind some typical concepts from human being .
there is no logic in nature, in the sense human being use it. because there is no empathy and no respect.
and this is hard to accept.
maybe once you do it you can sense a little part of what it means.

I like you 3am notes!
I'd really love to meet you and talk about ANYTHING this way. I like you.

P.S. here in Italy now it's almost 9pm.
wherever you are

Tis a very thought provoking journal my love @>-->--

3 a.m. tis the time that it seems I go to bed around lately. If we were together this morning though my love, I would have happily stayed up with *you* to contemplate and have this discussion. Also I had so many other things I wanted to discuss with *you* too. Sighs…. I love *you*. xo

I doubt there could be anyone smarter than *you* my love. *You* never cease to amaze me with your intelligence, sighs…..

a. *You* are very young my love.I would have *you* know, I spoke with a 100 year old lead prospect yesterday. I actually called for his wife and sadly he told me she passed away 10 years ago and he was so friendly and told me he is 100 and wouldn’t have use for new furniture or remodeling, because he doesn’t know if he will wake up the next day. Everyday is a struggle for him to breathe. Bless his heart. He almost made me tear up. I am such a sensitive softy. Especially when he told me his wife had passed away, oh my I felt so bad that I called him to remind him of her death….

b. Galaxies, Sun, Earth, Moon, Stars all of such are gifts from God and are evidence of how truly amazing he is. Okay, maybe I have to name one person smarter than *you* my love. I’m sure *you* would agree that God takes the cake eh. Smiles and Winks*.

c. Indeed we are young. I think about how centuries ago the humans lived a lot longer, because their diets were more healthy. They weren’t eating all of the processed foods that we have these days. They were also much shorter than we are these day. We would all be considered giants to many of them. Have *you* noticed how short the ceilings and doorways on old castles in England are? Well that is how small the average human was many years ago. The Asians are one culture that have more or less kept their correct figures and sizes, although some of them are much taller or fuller than they use to frequently be, but more of them seem to be petite like humans were meant to be.

Christmas lights are adoring our Christmas tree, we love the dvd and the vhs’s (I have lots of both, smiles), my Dad has much experience with metallurgy, I so love Meet the Parent’s movie, smiles, and *you* must mean wrapping a vegan ham http://www.cosmosveganshoppe.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Stor... in foil, winks*.

I so love tinyness (Is that a word?). Anything little is precious to me. My Grandma Hamblin collects miniature tea cups and when I was a little girl I would gaze at her curio’s where her collection of these miniature tea cups were. She also had a really neat miniature cabinet with tiny little foods. It looked like an antique old food shelve with the cutest tiny foods. Oh my the bag of flour was adorable. Smiles and blinks.

d. Since *you* are Christian to my love, *you* should probably get what I mean when I say that Christian’s on Earth are encouraged to be loving, tolerant, patient considerate, etc. Our Savior Jesus Christ demonstrated a perfection in the way of living. We mortals all have our flaws and struggle in our every day lives with such efforts. We have a sort of built-in ‘Original Sin’, which makes us naturally tend to want to be selfish, arrogant, and even sometimes intolerant of others.

As believer’s in God, or Heavenly Father as I refer to him, I’m not ever going to be willing to accept that he would allow the absolutely exquisite complexity of we humans to be created, without also allowing for the possibility of significant importance of each & every one of the multitudes of such lives. That would just be too silly!!

God Gave To Give Us Life - John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16

GOD LOVES US!!!!!! He put us on this earth to be tested. We are here to demonstrate to him that we want to be good spirits and do what is right. To do unto other’s as we would want to be treated. God has demonstrated his love for us at such a grande’ personal cost. We know that God loves us, because he gave his Son Jesus Christ for us. God loves us!! Lest we not forget this, he has never intended nor wanted the power of the perished Satan to claim us, so he has given us all the power of his love and it is such a beautiful love. God sacrificed so we could have eternal life. We should never doubt God’s love for us. We should never allow Satan rob us of this amazing life-giving truth. God loves us all and wants to give us life!!

My Love, I think it is precious how *you* added Disco to that paragraph.Winks* I think *you* could give us all the meaning for Disco in the best context, winks* I so love *you*!!

e. Oh My, I guess we will all have to pray that the Black Hole doesn’t suck up any of us. If we are loving and follow in the footsteps of Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ I truly believe that we won’t have to worry about such a problem.

Speaking of a black hole, I saw the scariest movie ever about a black hole back in like 2000. I cannot recall the name of it at the moment, but hopefully I will think of it. That movie just got under my skin and scared me more than any has ever and *you* know me, I don’t like scarey movies, but it was made to be an action/thriller/mystery, yet was more frightening to me than any horror I’ve ever seen (WelL I haven’t seen many horrors, because I don’t like watching them, but *you* know what I mean, muaz xxxx).

*You* said, "this is why sometimes it's better to go to sleep early, rather than stay up until 3 a.m pondering a bunch of un-answerables. all answers welcome."

Indeed my love.I should follow in your thoughts process. I was worrying so much the past few days about what was to come with my job and then yesterday when I realized I was worrying for nothing and the blessings were actually abundantly poured out to me, I felt like a Silly Goose indeed.

Thank *you* for this very interesting and thought provoking journal my love!!! *You* intrigue me so…Sighs….

I Love, Love, Love *You* With All My Heart,

Your Eternal Love Rachelle, Lil Brayden & Pets

i am so fascinated by such

i am so fascinated by such things recently! :)
i have a good image to illustrate Your first point:
http://picturepush.com/public/2618975
and a nice thing about perspective:
http://www.sonnyradio.com/perspective.htm

Fascinating!

I'm fascinated with astronomy from young ages.
One of the most fascinating image for 3 am thinking is Hubble Ultra Deep Field. They made exposure 11.3 days on an square area of less than 1 mm by 1 mm if you held it 1 meter away with your hand and the result is here and cool video here. There are around 10000 galaxies on this photo - each dot is a galaxy!

Maybe our universe is simply infinite and fractal in nature and our galaxies are just parts of much larger molecules of a larger universe and the other way around - each molecule of us consists of billions of smaller galaxies where other civilizations live and die every second...
Some interesting details are also in this book: "Progress continues, and our own research continues for the purpose of understanding and relating to the large being of whom we are a part, and on whose atoms we are parasites. These atoms are the planets and the stars. In fact, we have been able to discover that intelligent living beings in the infinitely small live on particles that are planets and suns to them. They ask the same questions as ourselves..."

Fascinating is also the Fermi Paradox where they calculated that it only takes 5 - 50 million years for a civilization to colonize the galaxy(this is short time compared to age of our galaxy - 13000 million years)- so where are all the visiting aliens?

Maybe a Zoo hypothesis solves that :o)

Perspective

I love to think along those lines, but let me play devil's advocate here: all is a question of perspective. Does size imply importance? (or as the old topic says, does size matters?) Are we not significant to the universe because we are such a tiny (space-tiny and time-tiny) part of it? But then, how significant are those 100,000,000,000 galaxies to me? Very impressive yeah, and a cool thing to think about, but that won't change my life, will it? Unless I become an astronomer or something I guess. How significant is a small kid starving in a dark corner of Africa to the president of a large nation or the CEO of a top-100 company? And viceversa?

This is all an intelectual game. Which of course, is a very human thing to do, right? ;-)

Love,

Alex
