ah, just back from 48 hours with npr in dc. i love npr.

ah, just back from 48 hours with npr in dc. i love npr. i want to move there, maybe they'll let me sleep in a utility closet. seriously, npr is one of the best things about media in america. smart and progressive and idiosyncratic and interesting and understated. and their numbers keep going up while conventional radio and media continue their descent into the toilet of low ratings and diminishing revenues. perhaps conventional radio and media could learn some things from npr? like:

1 respect your audience
2 smart and funny are not mutually exclusive
3 the lowest common denominator is/are not the only demographic
4 people actually have attention spans longer than .7 seconds when the programming is smart and interesting
5 screaming at people is not the best way to sustain their attention
6 people will be loyal if you give them good reasons to be loyal

i'm not sure if i'm allowed to say why i was at npr in dc for 48 hours.  so i won't.  at least for now. at some point when i'm allowed to i'll say why i was at npr in dc for 48 hours.
i do as i'm told. obediently,

npr is a good choice

I've been looking to move to npr as well.
It is a great spot.
With all the convenience in the area, it is a perfect place to settle down. You coul enjoy the great comfort sitting back home to watch movies online and call for takeaway food 24/7.

I have never before seen a person glance and smile, sit and walk this
way, he thought; truly, I wish to be able to glance and smile, sit and
walk this way, too, thus free, thus venerable, thus concealed, thus

Hi Moby!

Wanted to share with you this beautiful hymn by Jean Sibelius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr5kPTnhMJQ It reflects our Independence Day that is on this day today, the 6th of December (1917).

FINLANDIA-HYMN
Oi Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs koittaa,
Oh Finland, behold, thy day is dawning,
yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois,
the threat of the night has been banished
ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa
and the skylark in the brightness of the morning is singing
kuin itse taivahan kansi sois.
as if the firmament (sky) itself was sounding
Yön vallat aamun valkeus jo voittaa,
The powers of the night are being won by the morning whiteness
sun päiväs koittaa, oi synnyinmaa!
thy day will dawn, oh motherland

Oi nouse, Suomi, nosta korkealle
Oh arise, Finland, (upthrust, heighten)raise high
pääs seppelöimä suurten muistojen,
your head garlanded by the great memories
oi nouse, Suomi, näytit maailmalle
Oh arise, Finland, you proved to the world
sa että karkoitit orjuuden
that thou banished the slavery
ja ettet taipunut sa sorron alle,
and did not give in under the tyranny
on aamus alkanut, synnyinmaa!
thy morning has begun, oh motherland.

(Sorry my translation may not be perfect)...?

The whole composition is called Finlandia by Jean Sibelius http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgwr3wrenkQ and was composed just before 1899 by Sibelius. Later on in 1940? these words were made to the latter part of this composition; to the Finlandia-hymn. The words above in the Finlandia-hymn have to do with the winterwar between Finland and Russia (11/1939-3/1940).

Here is one beautiful version of the Psalm 46:10 from the Bible with the music from Finlandia.

This Is My Song

Finlandia (This Is My Song) Sibelius http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvz9PvczUMI

Melody - "Finlandia" Jean Sibelius, 1899

Lloyd Stone, 1934

This is my song, Oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine.
But other hearts in other lands are beating,
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh hear my song, oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

May truth and freedom come to every nation
May peace abound where strife has raged so long;
That each may seek to love and build together,
A world united, righting every wrong.
A world united in its love for freedom,
Proclaiming peace together in one song.

"Be Still, My Soul"
by Catharina von Schlegel, 1697-?
Translated by Jane Borthwick, 1813-1897

1. Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2. Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3. Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart
And all is darkened in the vale of tears;
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrows and thy fears.
Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay
From His own fulness all He takes away.

4. Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

re eurydice and manu

Salut manu, ouais c'était génial le Zénith, mais j'aurai du aller en fosse... les gens assis étaient trop mous !

Eurydice said :

Translation :
I COULDN’T care less, he's so cute !
have you seen him recently on stage ?
In Paris (Zenith, 13th of November), he told them "tu es très jolie mon petit chouchou", hum, how to resist ?
It's a pity the forum has closed down. It is usefull when you want to go to a live with fans or discuss about cultural point of view.
Moby is a very open-minded person, that's why I'm surprised that his fans can criticize our culture.
I'm happy to meet a french fan on the website !

Gros bisous !

Tif'

No, i haven't seen moby on stage this year (unfortunately).
i wonder why moby sings in french. he rarely sings on his tracks, so why does he add an other difficulty with french words.. does moby want to send a message to his french fans ? or does he love this language or does he like difficulties ? i don't know.

Bisous
A plus

PS : in a previous post, i wanted to say "french fries were forbidden"..

salut les frenchies !

i'm trying a translation :
nice to meet french people here. i remember, when i posted on the moby's forum in 2003, i felt alone and sometimes i was attaked.. it wasn't a good idea to be french on an american forum, in 2003.. (even "french fries" were forgotten).. that's why i left the forum.. but i heard moby sing "je suis celui qui t'aime encore" and here i'm again..

The Universe says hello

The universe says hello.

I hate what I look like.

The universe says hello.

If I was beautiful...

the universe says hello.

Moby you have to know

Moby you have to know-- I love you so much.

A day in the life of Misty Rawhide

Bed clings to me from morning to night my company, my friend. I fear death for I have heard the universe say hello. Something is not right, I can't pack up and go. I'm worried and I am slow. The clothes don't help, it's getting cold. My mouth twitches I am in a constant dream state. I have trouble getting organized my name says sloppy. I rather take it easy than to consume my mind with work. I am never going to learn how to drive. I read Julia, I love Julia and I compare the two. Another Mistake, another Paul another love letter to write. Moby makes me play a game with my toes and I go back underneath the sheets. Is there a stigma for a Bisexual? Another love letter, Another journalist, another Nathaniel Ayers. I hope everything goes well.

I'm a cow girl now

When I didn't know anything about writing a play I sent this Document to NPR- "Ice Cream for World Peace." I thought I plagerized the name or something because it's not on the world wide web. There is no book, "Ice Cream For World Peace." If I had a lovely editor I could try being an author. Anyways, I want to thank you for not making fun of me. I know stop the stigma. I wish. I wish I was more beautiful and intelligent to say hey I'm schizophrenic. I went to the Omega Institute I fell in Love with Paul Salopek who was imprisoned in Darfur, there's scars on my face and I fell in love with Julia Butterfly Hill and the universe said hello to me. You don't know anymore, if somebody whispers something about you it becomes an hallucination. Everything is a dream. I am greatful for this soundtrack because It matches my mood and behavior. I am happy journalists are in my company I feel as if they watch your back. If I was rich but there is this word called 'women and power'- one day. I would'nt mind getting a makeover from Moby. YOU ARE COOL.

salut tifenn alors c'était

salut tifenn alors c'était super le zénith!

Je suis de ton avis, eurydice !

you said: "however, since 2 years, french media, radios and televisions are more and more popular. the quality of programs is not more so good.. an often demagogue..
i'm afraid we are influenced by american programs particulary on tv with games and series.."

but you forgot reality Tv, which is the worst thing that american brought us !

it's very deshumanizing (does it mean sthg in english ?)....

but I don't watch TV a lot. Programs are not interesting: too much serials, entertaining programs, and when I watch news, it's all about pandemic influenza A(psychosis unjustified) or Nicolas Sarkozy (propaganda)

I love Laurent Ruquier programs (TV and Radio), Groland Magzine, L'Effet Papillon, or Salut les Terriens. And the best chanel I've ever known : Arte !!!! it's very cultural, good for children and adults... however, young adults prefer watch TV programs destroying the brain... I'm only 21, but I know if I have children, they won't watch TV. I want them to be critical, smart and EDUCATED !

Ok, i wrote too much...

une 'tite française qui en a marre ! nah !!!!!

Gros bisous mon petit chouchou !!!

npr

moby moby moby: npr loves you too. but i recently had to go on an npr fast because i couldn't stomach their daily shilling for animal enterprise and their obvious anti-animal rights slant. practically every time i tuned into atc or morning ed there would be some piece supporting animal torture, known as science, because science is evidently some kind of god, and perhaps because npr has some corporate sponsors who, i suspect, dictate this kind of reporting. and then there was that cheerful piece about foodies taking a hog butchering class....no, i don't expect everyone at npr to be vegan, but for crying out loud....

i have been an npr listener for many years, in spite of all the ted baxters and the amazingly shrieky jacky lydon, and all the stuff that occasionally makes me embarrassed for everyone involved. i have long adored nina totenberg and susan stamberg and carl kasell and dan schorr. i have always love the *idea* of npr. but it's just too hard to listen to them fawn all over animal science and celebrate flesh as food while occasionally framing veg*nism as a quaint alternative.

since you are best friends, could you talk to npr about this? find out who is giving them so much money and try getting them to climb onto the fair and balanced wagon?

thanks, moby!

radio, television etc

in france, i suppose we are lucky because we have choice between "popular" radios with games and music, radios with information programs, and cultural radios. i think "france inter" is a good synthesis of all that, with a program including actualities and good music and theatre and cultural debates and quizz..
I listen to "france culture" too, (when i don't have headache): they talk about art or literature or philosophy or religion or politic or history.. and sometimes about philosophy and religion or about art and politic in history. it's always a pleasure to learn something in your day..
however, since 2 years, french media, radios and televisions are more and more popular. the quality of programs is not more so good.. an often demagogue..
i'm afraid we are influenced by american programs particulary on tv with games and series..

dommage..

bisous from france (cultural country)

PS : i thought you were on virgin radio on friday night
PS2 : sorry for my english. il hope to be understandable.

I'm very happy that *you* had such a wonderful time in DC

-at NPR my love!!!! Tis sounds so very interesting. Was a documentary made perhaps? Smiles and Winks*.

I agree with *you* 100% with your list of what conventional radio & media could learn from NPR. Smiles. That's an outstanding list really.

Anxiously looking forward to and waiting to hear the song *you* were recording in DC my love.

Hmmmmmm *you* are not allowed to say why *you* were there for 48 hours.....Mysterious & Intriguing, Oh My, Winks*.... Angel Kisses xxxx

@>-->--

P.S. My Lil Angel Taz has a bad ear infection love. So we went to the ER, we were there for a few hours earlier this morning and he was diagnosed with 'Otitis Media'. Don't get that confused with media, it is a middle ear infection, but I thought it quite coincidental that *you* wrote of media. I know, I'm very much an eclectic and strange angel aren't I, giggles, well I can't help it. It's just strange and ironic that I read media twice in the last hour. Once on Brayden's diagnosis and then to arrive home and read about it in your journal. That word is following me I guess. :) Smooches xxxxx

ha!

i already know why You were there :>
the project sounds veeeery interesting, i can't wait for them to publish the result.
