you know, it's depressing that so many people say, 'i'd eat better if it wasn't so expensive.' well, here's a fun (i'm being facetious) fact: 78.5% of all government agricultural subsidies in the u.s go towards meat and dairy production. if meat and dairy weren't so heavily subsidized they would be, roughly, ten times more expensive than they currently are (pork that's $3.50 a pound would be, roughly, $30 a pound if all agricultural subsidies were removed). organic and locally grown food are expensive because they aren't heavily subsidized. it really is that simple. it's just a shame (probably a tragedy) that hundreds of billions of our tax dollars go to subsidize the meat and dairy industries, when almost no subsidies actually go to organic or local farmers.

Another bad excuse

It's always funny to see that in every country they use the same excuse to eat meat.
In Belgium it's just the same. There is only one excuse they use even more.
"Meat just taste too good, I don't want to stop eating it". I think that's the most irritating excuse of them all! They just lack the discipline to stop eating it and think that vegetarian food can't be good. They're just lazy!
I always ask them if they would eat other humans too if everyone was doing it...some say they would. This really creeps me out.
People just don't want to think about what they're doing, they just don't want to consider the consequences.
They all think that if everyone's doing it, there is no problem.

This scares me so. We are killing the planet, killing animals and we even like it!

I hope people will start to change soon.
It just can't go on like this.

I know

ugh, yes, it is depressing. My heart falls back- it slacks when I have to hear this from people. I resent the way people grow up with poor nutrition and health advice here. We get our advice from t.v. segments and commercials. We go to the doctor but the quickest resolution is prescription. no word of advice on anything we could be doing differently. I once was told by a doctor to eat an apple a day- I froze pondering, weighing the consequences of his opinion. You see- this could result in an inactivity of my bowels. I know so, because my mother once bought a really big bag of green apples when I was smaller and I decidedly ate one a day until I ended up needing to call a doctor- he then prescribed something for me. I took grandma's advice instead. This taught me a long time ago that a balanced diet is very important.

I don't know much about farm subsidies. But I have read that a good deal goes to the production of cotton and grains. I think that you are cute when you are facetious, by the way.

We're missing part of the story here...

As a medical professional I have to say we are missing part of your story here regarding apples (green apples have around 3 grams of fiber; which is 12% of the recommended amount based on a 2,000 calorie diet). To blame your bowel problems on the apples is foolish. Were you eating a lot of cheese, drinking lots of fluid, did you lead a sedentary lifestyle or one with lots of physical activity? There are many factors that can lead to bowel problems and to blame it on green apples is ridiculous.

Inexpensive healthy

It's actually amazing how inexpensive is to eat healthy. It's a huuuge prejudice that eating healthy (and here I talk about fruits and veggies) it's expensive... It's all a matter of combining these so you can cook a two person meal each day for 20 - 30 minutes. So no leftovers. Hard to explain in a short comment, but I'm happy I found how inexpensive it actually is...

Try to cook with no leftovers, then you'll realise how little you need out of one veggie... And NOT boil them! But gentle in a little sprinkle of olive oil, for about 20 minutes on a medium fire, mix together some freshly cut veggies... Add a little bit of boiled water on the bottom of the pan only, to prevent sticking to the pan and allow the juices of the veggies to come out. And of course, salt, pepper, a clove of garlic, a small onion, some fresh cut peterselie at the end... etc, etc. It can be so creative and fun! And - surprisingly - so cheap actually!

For the Love of Animals,Our Climate & Healthier Eating.....

Good Afternoon My Love,

It is a sad thing indeed to read so many people write that they would eat healthier diets if it was less expensive to be able to do so. I remember myself saying the same thing when I was in my young college years. I ate salad’s, carrots and apples, beans, oh and rice, but I really didn’t have the money to buy veggie burgers, tofu, veggie protein items to make the diet taste yummier and many of the things that make meals more exciting. I was quite the boring vegetarian eater, because I didn’t have the money for the vegetarian items, such as vegan meatless sausage, crumbles, etc. And I must admit at times throughout the years thereafter I at times struggled to be able to buy as much of the fancier more delicious items to make grander meals, but I’ve been grateful and happy for the foods I do have and I have made the best of it and anyway, I am known to at times thought to be a repetitively boring eater. I eat the same things usually, giggles. Even when I have the opportunity to try something different, I’m so picky and moody that at times I don’t feel like trying something new.

That’s very much a shame and a tragedy that organic & local farmers aren’t subsidized better and that the government pushes so heavily on subsidizing meat. I hope that there is something the US Citizens can do to change that in the near future. That is just not right. The government is basically paying for and promoting the killing of animals and our climate. That’s so wrong and I wonder why that hasn’t been changed yet. Tis so sad.

I urge all those people that don’t make a lot of money, to shop at Walmart for your vegan Morning Star brand food. It is much lower in price at Walmart than anywhere else. As far as organic vegetables and fruit go, many times you can get great prices along the street at vegetable stands, or here in Florida we have Publix Grocery store which has okay prices on such. I wish we had a Whole Foods here in Fort Myers, but we don’t.

This is a wonderful journal my angelic love. I hope we can somehow urge the government to subsidize organic and local farmers. Praying. Xo

I Love *You* With all my Heart,

Your Eternal Love Rachelle

Farm Subsidies

As a southern man (TN,USA), I take a lot of heat for preferring an organic diet and refraining from consumption of beef and pork. I appreciate your repeated posts regarding this topic, specifically those that illustrate its environmentally destructive process. However, being a man of business as well as principle, I find that the economic argument presented may fuel a deeper dialogue and more transformative results than simply arguing environmental reasons alone.
Just one request, please list your references in future posts so we can argue our points more credibly.

Thank You,
