just arrived in novi sad, serbia, and getting ready to go play with patti smith and kraftwerk

hi, just arrived in novi sad, serbia, and getting ready to go play with patti smith and kraftwerk (i do love the complete randomness of european festival line-ups).

last night in wales was, uh, ok. to be honest, the audience seemed as if they'd been drinking heavily for a couple of months. at one point someone threw a muddy shoe at me and i couldn't figure out if it was a gesture of: a-hostility b-appreciation (like a cat leaving a dead bird on your bed as a present) c-liquor/drug fueled derangement d-all of the above, somehow.

right now i'm getting ready to leave for the festival site and sitting in my hotel with the windows open and IT'S NOT RAINING. it always amazes me when it doesn't rain in europe in the summertime. and perhaps as a sign of global warming or just general irony, it's been raining heavily in new york since i left, but sunny and warm where we've been in europe.

in other odd news, a friend of mine sent me this picture from when she and michael jackson were in elementary school together (he's first row, 2nd from the left). it's so baffling and sad that the toxic combination of fame and deep-seated emotional issues led him down such a pointlessly sad and self-destructive road. i really do wonder why so many people aspire to fame when famous people tend to have the life expectancy of unlucky coal miners or alaskan fishermen. so here's young michael jackson, an abject lesson in why people should become carpenters or school-teachers and not pop stars:

Young Michael Jackson

moby

thanks for this

thanks for this post.

wales

I was at the festival in wales the other day, and I have to agree, it wasn't a great crowd, mostly teenagers who turned up just to get pissed for the whole weekend. Still, despite the shoe, still a great show moby and thanks for carrying on, I thought it was all over when you walked off mid-song. I think the political messages were a bit lost on the crowd though...

how sentimental...

of course the shoe throwing isn't, but the post surely is. i'm assuming just as long as you're not in iraq it's "ok" ;)

as a friend recently stated, "michael jackson has become the media's golden calf." obviously, this may appear to be true to the senses, but i also find it interesting (like many other celebrity deaths) that it shows the blatant hypocrisy of TV.

ironic? i think so.

ohhhhh novi sad, such a dear place in my mind!

I've attended EXIT Fest 2005, where i actually saw Underworld for the first time. Lovely place for a festival, lovely live acts take place there yearly! When i saw this years' line up - staring Moby, Royksopp and Kraftwerk - there was nothing more i wished for then to be able to attend again. Unfortunately i couldn't. I am positive the shows were awesome...

Waiting to see you, Moby, live again!

a song of Patti Smith's that was played my friend's funeral

Did you get to hang out with Patti Smith?

Some of her music is really special to me. A friend of mine made a film called 'In My Father's Den' and it featured songs off Patti Smith's ablum 'Horses'. It was his first feature film and it got into film festivals around the world then he died of cancer.

'Free Money' played at his funeral, right at the end, when they were carrying out the coffin and all of the people were slowly leaving the cathedral.

So if you see Patti Smith, tell her that Brad McGann had 'Free Money' playing at his funeral. He really loved that album 'Horses'. I did too. When I first met Brad back in 1985 I had him over to my house and I put on 'Horses' and we played it over and over and over.

I'd love to know if Patti Smith watched his film and what she thought of it. It's an amazing film. If you haven't ever seen it Moby, I thoroughly recommend that you watch it.

Shoe Throwing

I have also witnessed a "shoe throwing".
Back in 1996 (or somewhere there abouts) in Knoxville, TN someone threw a shoe onstage at Dave Matthews during an outdoor concert.

A couple of interesting observations:

1) Dave remained composed, finished the song, and then said: "to whomever threw this shoe, come up here to claim it and I'll shake your Motherf'ing hand".

2) People do indeed wear shoes in Tennessee

Zero-G

Hi Moby!

Sad that people drink too much. Yes, could feel the guts totally clogged...That means really negative energies.

Nice that you visited Finland, Moby. You did not perform here, did you? Well, perhaps the next time then.

actually I find it somewhat

actually I find it somewhat comedic. you could have honored us with a picture of the muddy shoe. but then, further muddy shoe throwers could get the wrong ideas. yikes. About Michael, hmmm, I think that he was looking to relieve his bodily pain. I'm not sure if he wanted to drug himself up all of the time. He didn't seem like the type, as playful and childlike as he was. Yet his changed appearance can take one to believe he had underlining psychological issues, however there is also the fact that he had a skin disorder.
I think that for the most part he was a sorely misunderstood person. That could/can make a person crazy and isolated. But he was numbing his bodily pain.

Incredible show at EXIT

Moby, firstly let me say your show at EXIT festival was incredible. You got the crowd moving like no other act on the lineup so far, and it was great to see your interaction with the crowd. I'm sure you could feel just how much the entire crowd enjoyed their short time with you. A truly unforgettable experience, and one that I hope to repeat at some time in the future. Hearing the live version of GO took me back to happy times, and it is still one of my all-time favourite tracks. You're a legend, and if I ever bump into Eminem I'll be sure to send the idiot your greetings :) You're a legend in many people's eyes, and I hope you continue to share your vast talents with us for many years to come. By the way, your guitar skills are very impressive! :)

Secondly, let me apologise on behalf of the British people for the behaviour in Wales. We unfortunately have many disrespectful people in the UK, and I imagine this person was drunk as you suggested, and decided that a good way to end their night was to spoil other people's fun. This is part of the reason I travel to Serbia to enjoy the EXIT festival - although there are many Brits here too, there are far too many good people for the bad ones to make any impression or spoil any fun. I hope this experience doesn't stop you visiting the UK - you have many, many fans who have appreciated your work since the release of GO, and I know that this person in Wales would be a minority example of disrespect for a truly talented artist. Believe me, most of us recognise that there aren't many "Moby's" out there, and most artists don't even come close to the quality of your work. Long may you continue to gift us with your creations :)

RIP Michael Jackson - another legend who should still be with us today. I hope you find the peace that you lacked and deserved during your lifetime. Your achievements will not be forgotten.

tour schedule

hey Moby, i was just looking at your tour schedule and i'm wondering how many times you'll cross Europe this summer ;) i guess that's the problem with these festivals - you can't just do for example Poland (i'm taking this as an example, cause that's where i am) and then the neighbouring countries in one go, but you go have to go all the way to Wales, then back around here to Latvia, through Spain and again to Czech Republic. that's got to be pretty tiresome. but i hope you're having a lot of fun during your shows (i certainly hope you liked the one in Gdynia, cause i loved it :) ) i've been busy reading your past journals, they're both very interesting and funny, thanks for sharing.
lots of love, hunkydoris

Helo! from EXIT Festival!

I've just come from your show at EXIT Festival! IT was awesome, incredible, breathless, pure magic, I reached a state of nirvana... no more words to describe! :) I've been listening to you since I was 6, and finally lived the day to see you live! You are my no.1 artist! You are like MJ, Sinatra and Mozzart! :) Thank you for being here!!! I hope you gonna read this. I have just two things to say. First, You have been very lucky that it wasn't rainning, it rained yesterday and every second day for past month, witch is unbelievable... normally it doesn't rain for 2-3 months! :) Second, you say thank you on serbian very very well!! Looking forward to hearing from you and your impressions of EXIT!

This is a very heartfelt & moving journal My Love....

Good Evening/Morning My Love:

I don’t much like how Novi Sad has the word ‘Sad’ in it. That’s a bit too depressing for my taste for the name of a place, *you* know what I mean, muaz….xxxxx

I don’t know much of Patti Smith’s music, it is okay. Kraftwerk has some good stuff, but *You* by far my love was the super star of the show. Everyone was honored to be in your presence Honey. xxxx

I’m very sorry to read that the Britt’s in the UK weren’t very nice to be around and how dare a person throw a muddy show or anything for that matter at *you*….My poor baby, Angel Kisses Better My Love xxxx. Bless your dear heart. The people must have been drunk. How could anyone disrespect *you* sweetheart. 

*You* had no rain and it’s funny, because I’m not kidding *you* Brayden asked me this afternoon why Florida always rains. Well, it seems like it is always raining, but there are times when it is so dry here that all the creeks become dry and cracked and we wish we had rain, so when it rains it pours or it simply doesn’t rain. Giggles.

Awwwww, that’s very sad to see such a smiling face, Michael’s natural face in his elementary school picture, when I think of his many emotional and deeply scarred insecurities he had with his looks, that made him have multiple unnecessary and fatal looking plastic surgeries. I pray he is happy and content with himself now that he is in heaven.

It is indeed truly very sad that seemingly many famous pop stars become hazards to themselves and usually have shorter lives. I hope that *you* will live well over 100 my darling love. Keep up your healthy eating, make your drink & drug habits the healthy kinds/choices, continue on with your sweet and loving good works towards animals and mankind and if it so be Heavenly Father will see fit to have *you* live a very long and fulfilling life. *You* are such a special person and I cannot imagine the world without *you* and most especially I cannot imagine my life without *you* Sweetheart.

I Love *You* With All My Heart,

Your Eternal Love Rachelle

"sad" in Novi Sad

I just have to say that "Sad" doesn't mean sad in english :). "Novi" means NEW and "Sad" means TOWN. ;) I'm form Novi Sad :)

Moby and Kraftwerk

Tangerine Dream (Edgar Froese) and Kraftwerk (Ralf Hutter) are THE two truly seminal and great German electronic bands. Froese and Hutter are also vegetarians. Hutter's a marathon biker too ! Patti Smith is a rock/punk icon akin to my favorite female vocalist, Chrissie Hynde.

Like many I was pretty

Like many I was pretty sickened by the sycophants & their wall to wall coverage on the 24 hour "news" networks. It's hard to reconcile the hyperbole surrounding his death with the same people who tore into him as "Wacko Jacko."

However, I watched a re-air of the UK interview from a few years ago and was saddened by Micheal's recollections of the horrible abuse he suffered as a child. And like so many of the abused, he came to be an abuser himself.

As you say, a tragedy.
