list time again

list time again:

a - i watched 'anvil: the movie' on the flight over from new york. it really is an amazing movie. the main characters are so painfully endearing. in a weird way it made me love canada even more... and did anyone else notice that the drummer's name is also the name of the man who directed and wrote 'spinal tap'? (rob reiner). and the drummer's edward hopper inspired paintings were surprisingly good.

b - ok, maybe not such a list, as i can't think of much else to include.

c - i'm listening to the first 3 adam and the ants records, from dirk wears white sox to prince charming. they're so good, and they definitely deserve a place in the credible music canon.

other albums/artists that are often overlooked in the canon... the first 5 simple minds albums. the first 3 orchestral manoevers in the dark albums. the chameleons uk. early a certain ratio. the gun club. polyrock. cowboys international. i'll never understand why hipsters rediscover certain bands (pixies, mission of burma, the stooges, etc), and not others (the gun club, early simple minds, early omd, etc). i guess it doesn't help that some bands (adam and the ants, simplel minds, omd) made truly amazing records followed by some records that weren't, uh, so amazing. i guess the less amazing later records taint the early amazing records somehow. which is a shame.

d - it's transit strike day in the uk. and the bnp (anti-immigrant quasi-fascist party) are gaining in popularity in the uk. it's like 1976. bring on the punk rock.

e - ok, time to go to rehearsal and then to see 'the hangover.' i may be an ex-philosophy student, but my tastes in movies oftentimes run to the adolescent and puerile.

f - oh, i'm dj'ing at 'matter' here in london on saturday night. with trentemoller. and then the meltdown show tuesday at royal festival hall. but that's sold out, no more tickets. ok, thanks

Soooo True

Love Adam and The Ants yet. "Stand and Deliver" is still my fave for some reason. I love overlooked music. Blondie's second album "Plastic Letters" comes to mind. So many layers.

London now. Wow but it must be cool to be you. Then again, I might get tired of traveling if I did it so much. Remind me not to become famous. LOL.

Thanks for the post. Caused some good memories of music.

OMD-? "If you leave" of

OMD-?
"If you leave"
of course! Greatest 80's song ever!
Woo hoo!

"joan of arc" is
a something to tell.

yay, and now to go to the movies
with my little brother. He's not so
little anymore, though. By the way-
He thinks that Star-Trek was way
better than Star Wars!
I oppose this idea of course!
But I do think I may be wearing
a Star Trek costume this Halloween.
I always thought that would be fun.

i completely agree...

especially with regard to OMD's first three albums. "architecture and morality," specifically, is one of my favorite albums of all time. it still sounds fresh and unique almost 30 years later. i'm also kind of shocked that the hipster crowd hasn't rediscovered them. while i'll admit to liking some of their cheesy later records ("tesla girls, tesla girls...") i won't defend them quite as vigorously as i would the early stuff, which is art-pop at its finest.

also, not to sound sycophantic, but your remix of "souvenir" is great.

i just heard that OMD and Simple Minds might be touring the states later this year/early next year. definitely looking forward to that.

cheers,
-e

give•get & void engineering

Dear Moby,

Please have a peek at the short give•get movie if you have a chance. I'm out in the SFBay area working to encourage local manufacturers to get involved more directly in creating products for social service applications. If the concepts appeal to you, please pass on the word. I'm hoping to demonstrate grass roots appeal to industry contacts.

Take Care,
Ray

Oh Yeah Darling, a new list, wahoo!!

a) I haven't yet seen this movie, nor had I heard of it until this journal of yours my love, but I will see it when it comes out on video I'm sure. Kiss, Kiss.

I haven't seen Spinal Tap either. Is that a movie or a tv show? I was thinking it was a tv show. Can *you* tell I don't watch much on tv or go to movies much at all in the past while. Smooches.

b) I love your lists, no matter how short or long. They are always so thought provoking. Kisses. xxxx

c) I have never heard the adam and the ants records and I'm not sure if I have heard their music. I'll have to do a search online to see. Dirk Wear I don't know of, but I do know of Prince Charming, that is *You*, winks* and sighs....I sooooo love *you* my darling Mo!!!!

Music canon?

d) I haven't heard all of the Simple Minds albums my love, but I do like some of their songs that I have heard, mainly the 80's ones and in particular the song from one of the Molly Ringwald movies, which I cannot remember the name of. Was it Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink? Can't remember. I so love OMD's music, but have only ever owned the Best of OMD album. I haven't heard all their music. I played their best of cassette so much when I was very young. I heard their song 'If you Leave' when I was like 11 1/2 years old and fell in love with their music. Their music is the reason I love the New Wave genre' of music so much. They introduced that genre actually Every music artist I find has an album that isn't quite as good as another, just like with movies, some sequels aren't as good as the originals and it feels like they are tented when the bombers come to be, but that isn't the case, the original stayed the same. Twas still as exciting as it was before one watches the bad sequel. Just like with Enigma's music. I so love Michael Cretu's music, but some of his albums are a lot better than others. Smooches. xxxxoooo I love *you*!!!

e) I hope *you* had a wonderful rehearsal my darling love.

I haven't seen the Hangover either.

I love adolescence movies too. Smiles.

f) Good luck at Matter and the Meltdown my love. That's so neat that Meltdown sold out and I wish the very best for the winner of your contest ticket giveaway.

Tis another very delightful list my love.

I Love *You* With All My Heart,

Your Love Always Rachelle

Moby Is Loved In England

Moby is loved in England and Jeff Beck is a much better guitarist than Nigel Tufnell of Spinal Tap.

I think you'd make a great novel character and so....

Hi Moby,

I think you'd make a great novel character moby and so here is my invition to you to be a character in my novel.
you could either

a) be yourself exactly and write your own dialogue plus decide what you do within scenes created by me

b) be a cross between yourself and a fictional character created by me. i could then write in some or all of your/his dialogue and make some or all of the decisions about what you/he does within particular scenes, but you could also contribute to directing his role and make broader decisions about what kinds of things he does and doesn't do in the novel

c) hand him right over to me as a character and let me do whatever I like with him, to then hope that he comes out being at least a bit like you and that you like what he does and what i do with him in the story.

I have just sent off the story line which I recorded on audio cassetter tape, to your manager at d-e-f, in the hope that you will pick it up while you are in london.

by the way, it is a new story line that i put together (more or less) as a whole yesterday after having done some significant re-structuring to the story. I've had this novel in development for quite a long time. I was running out of time in the end and so i put myself into stream of consciousness mode and kept the tape recorder rolling while i spoke out the remainder of the story line to you yesterday, while knowing that the courier was due to arrive to pick it up in one and a half hours. There was a bit of other information I included in the pack. amazingly, the very second (literally), that i had finished and rewound one of the cassette tapes to the beginning, the "bang bang bang" of the courier knocking on my door happened. wheweeee!!!!

so be aware that although some of it is almost word perfect, some of it is a completely unedited stream of consciousness version of the story line.

i hope you like it. creating the work that I have to send to you recently has certainly got my creative fire going anyway.

p.s

the said cassette tapes should arrive at d-e-f this friday or on monday if they don't get held up at all in customs

Back in the day...

We were so lucky to be exposed to that amazing constant stream of new creations...OMD, A.Ant, etc. etc...I feel sorry for kids now-a-days...they just don't have that same creative surge we had..."New Wave". Thanks for reminding me about Adam, that had such a huge impact on us, but it's true he/they just don't get much, if any recognition.

been a long time . . .

Hi Moby,

Seems like eons ago since i last saw you and Paul at the post 53 garage sale in Darien circa 1983 . . .

I'll always remember the AWOL sessions at Paul's, with John, Jeff and Sarah and the graduation party I was so lucky you played at my place in '82 . . . classic times!

A few years ago I left a letter with my cousin, who gave it to his friend (a music teacher at the school they work at), who happened to live in your building . . . and left it at your door. I always wondered if you ever received it?

Anyway, love the new animation and I totally remember your scribblings on the bags at Johnny's! Just wanted to say hello old friend. Any chance of you touring California or more specifically the Santa Barbara Bowl? I'd love to see you.

Take care,
Craig Bailes

you know I love everything you do!

the cute sunflower is so cute I had to watch it a few times. Specially when it goes round and round like a little windmill toy. reminds me of childhood fantasies.
with the little idiot just sitting there, knocked out because it grew so big. You really are something! you're cute in a creative way.

Yes. List time. My favourite hahaha.

Rediscovering the past while looking forward to the future

I totally understand the thrill of rediscovering earlier albums of certain artists' work.

However I find that I could spend an eternity listening to great music in history, and often spend long periods of time doing just that.

Front 242, Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division, New Order, Sisters of Mercy, etc.

And don't even get me started on the Cure, could spend a year just listening to their discography.

I have managed to find some more recent music that is comparable. Namely TV on the Radio and The Horrors.

Seriously, check out The Horrors' new album Primary Colours. It is incredible.

Zero-G

welcome to london

and the rain, and the tube strike.. really needing your good energy & music around

look forward to seeing/hearing you on tuesday. can i make a request?? will you play first cool hive? :)

Truth

So sad but true about so many "lost" bands. I could add too many bands: Xtc, Ultravox (w/John Foxx esp.), Wire; man, I could go on and on.

We must be getting old(er), waxing nostalgic.

Love your new stuff,

Thomas
