nerd alert.
nerd alert. last night i filed into the generic megaplex at 19th and broadway to watch, courtesy of the new york observer, the new star trek movie. and i'm a nerd.
not only have i obsessively watched the original series (even when it was on tv originally...i'm old), but also tng and dsn and etc. the acronyms will only make sense to the initiated, i'm guessing. well, except for 'etc', that's pretty pedestrian.
so not only have i watched the different series (or serieses) i've also obsessively watched the movies and...and...uh, here's where i should probably keep my own counsel but i won't, i've read the books... yes. i've read many, many, many of the books, especially tng.
i know, i'm not proud. so, from my nerd/trekkie perspective the new star trek movie is perfect. really. no distracting movie stars. well acted. well written. nice monsters. cool things blowing up. and etc. and it has a narrative device that is awesome. i won't tell you what it is, but it actually enables this to be a new franchise. it might seem trite to some, but it's really well done. hopefully that'll make sense to you when you're done watching the movie. and now i've dug myself into a gigantic nerd-sized hole. and, as is usually the case when i find myself in a hole, i'll keep digging. oops, except i have to get back to work.
the movie is awesome.
ok, have a nice weekend.

I envy you for your nerdiness. I have tried and tried to play scrabble but it seems like I never get better or nerdier. Sigh. But indeed, I am also a nerd at heart.

Introducing my opinion
Misty Rawhide saw the movie and her response is whoa. If San Francisco is going to be the mecca for space schools and if our galaxy and technology is our future maybe further exploration should be considered for those experiencing hallucinations. I'm pretty sure Progress House or John George would want to know if they are receiving alien information from their clients. Maybe we should rethink our mental health? Like investigating enemy extraterrestrials causing Post-Traumatic Stress to our brains to seeking Graham Hancock's expertise on supernaturals. Art therapy for those with disturbed minds and Frank Chu being a test subject for NASA. Nevertheless we they are spying on you. P.S. 100% I love You.
geeks need fun, too
I may not be as obsessive as you, but I have seen all the series (perhaps liking ST: Enterprise, the last one, the most- though you and other geeks might consider that to be a sacrilege) and almost all the movies, and when a Star Wars book was offered for free download online, I read that. And it was excellent, in some ways better than the films, like with the idea that Han Solo's son becomes a Jedi meant to learn the dark side of the force yet use it for good, with the idea that it is the weakness of the person that makes them use the dark side for evil, and in fact it has certain advantages over the light side. And then the main story was that Han Solo's world was going to war with (I believe it's called) The Galactic Alliance (the good guys), so he fights on their side, while his son and daughter fight on the opposite side, expertly blurring the lines of good and evil/wrong and right, as it actually is- because we live in a world of gray. Anyway science-fiction can be great, and I'm looking forward to seeing Star Trek. And I've been to the theater you're talking about when I went to film school at NYU (and by the way, may take you up on that offer on mobygratis.com for the soundtrack to my first low-budget independent feature film, which I just got financing for, only problem being I was hoping more to score it with euphoric vocal trance, which you don't really do, but I may find some music I can live with from you, as I've been a fan since your first singles), though I spent more time at the Anjelika downtown or occasionally the Lincoln Plaza cinemas uptown- I've even been to Teany! But I live in central Florida now.

Nerd Alert
I think the whole idea of being or not being Nerd-ish is quite subjective. And, BTW, the actual word, 'nerd' tends to have negative connotations. By looking @ MY photo one's 1st impression may be that I'm a ditzy blond. I don't find it offensive; I just use it as a red flag & avoid people like that. I PREFER the company of 'Nerd-ish' guys. It's refreshing 2 B around educated & interesting people. It's what makes our world & industry so unique & fulfilling.

Hey moby: look, as an engineer I have always been fascinated for startrek series because it represents that desire of humans for lern more about our surroundings, I think this is why many people get identify with this type of sci fi stories.
Anyway, I only wanted to tell you that you should be proud of being intrested in science, or in this case, a thing based on science, so if the life gives you lemons....do lemonade with them!!! you're not a nerd, you are a believer......and remember, there are more believers out there hahaha
LOoks good

I read that in this movie space is quiet.
That gets my nerd raging. What is this 2001?
Moby Gratis
Hey Moby. Just stopping by to say hello, I noticed you update your journal often, that's awesome. Actually I was wondering if you checked your email recently because I submitted two requests for use of your song, "strata" a couple weeks ago on your mobygratis page and I haven't heard back yet. Hmmm my final project deadline is this thursday (yikes) and I can't imagine not using your song (it's such a beautiful song). Sorry for posting on your site like a dweeb, I know it's not relevant commentary. I'm just glad you have a site for aspiring filmmakers, especially students who can't afford the royalties for music. Anyway I hope you get back to me, thanks!

hi,
sorry, lost the link to the other place.
:-)
I'm nerd one level up....nork (nerd + dork = nork)...and I so remember being glued to the TV during "Star Trek" and wondering if someday we'd all be able to travel around the universe and them beam to wherever we wanted to go.... :-) It's good to have things to still wonder about at 42 as well.
*You* are so adorable my Precious Trekkie *You*
Smiles, this is such a fun loving journal my Darling. It makes me smile to read it. It also makes me want to remind *you* of how wonderfully *you* and my Dad would get along, because my Dad is a super obsessed trekkie as well, giggles. Although, I have never seen him where a trekkie costume before. I wonder, however, have *you* ever been seen dressing in the Trekkie gear? Smiles.
I don't know any of the Star Trek meanings, except that, when I was younger and my Dad was watching his Star Trek, the TV was set to stay on that tv show until my Dad finished watching it, even if my siblings and I wanted to watch something else, because Dad's Star Trek time was sort of sacred, hee hee...*You* trekkies are such an odd species of the humans, muaz. I feel like cuddling and watching this movie *you* speak so highly for with *you* snuggling. Kisses. Bring it on Baby, purrrs.
I love *you* ever so much my Precious Little Idiot Nerd,
Your Eternal Love Rachelle
