1 bernie madoff went to jail yesterday. not to indulge in petty vindictiveness, but: good. a friend of mine's mom had invested her retirement money with madoff. she is 67 years old and now has no retirement money left. it's all gone.
i try not to indulge in moral black and whites, but bernie madoff is a BAD MAN. he stole/lost $50 billion. he stole from charities and schools and hospitals and people who were planning on retiring. what sort of sociopath is able to go to sleep at night knowing that by day he'd been robbing money from charities and hospitals?
i really hope they are able to recover some of the $50 billion and return it to the charities and retirees who are now really struggling. also, how do you steal $50 billion? i mean, what do you spend it on? $50,000,000,000.00? you could make a bonfire of hundred dollar bills in your backyard and keep it burning constantly for 100 years and still not go through $50 billion. did bernie madoff surreptitiously buy greenland when no one was looking? i mean, what else do you do with $50 billion?
2 accents. in the ye olden days accents were the products of socio-economics and geography. but has anyone done a contemporary study of media/cultural accents? like bankers in cincinnati talking like surfers in long beach? 'dude, i'm totally down with shredding that bad boy!' or white kids in nashville talking like rappers in bed-stuy? 'yo, niggaz don't play me cos i'm a true player, knowwhati'msayin'?' or prep school kids from connecticut talking like texans? 'i, george w. bush, do solemnly swear to faithfully execute the office of president of the united states.' or rich brits talking like cockney guttersnipes, 'oi me old china plate, nice boat race, guv.' in the olden days your accent told the world where you were from, both geographically and socio-economically. now it tells the world what you aspire to be, what tv shows you've watched, and the depths of your insecurities (the moment a white guy in the midwest talks like a rapper or the moment a frat boy talks like a surfer they might as well be saying, 'i'm desperately insecure.'). has some smart cultural anthropologist done a study of accents that have been appropriated not through geography or class, but through exposure to media? if you're a smart cultural anthropologist maybe you could do this study. i, at the very least, would be interested.
3 i did something yesterday that was fun and exciting and involved a lot of my music and tv heroes. unfortunately i don't think i can tell you what it is. or was, rather. or will be. i'll find out if i can tell.
4 i'm defrosting my freezer. it's about time, as my freezer was looking like lex luthor's ice castle/palace. nothing says, 'glamorous and sexy rock and roll' like defrosting a freezer. when i'm done defrosting my freezer i might do laundry. i know, the party never stops.
5 have a good weekend.

Thanks for turning me on to veganism...
The change in diet has made a huge dent in my personal quality of life. Being under 30 and having 2 cardiac arrests, a rare form of cardiomiopathy, and high blood pressure; i didn't have the healthiest cardio system and a diet full of eggs and cheese wasn't helping.
Two years after a vegan diet - my cardiomiopathy has remediated, my blood pressure went down, and no more chest pains. And it feels good to contribute less to general cruelty. My quality of life has improved, I don't have persistent chest pains, and no more blood pressure meds. It was actually some linear notes that pushed me to make the move. So, sincerely, thank you.
Much love and respect.

Music in movies - one missing at least
Hi,
A heads up for you.
Love your music in the movies. And I make it a game to identify yours, Oakenfold's, etc. and then check with the credits to see if I'm right.
Just finished watching 'Sharkwater' (great movie, by the way) and the end credits scene had some great music. 'This has to be Moby...' I say to myself.
Surely, it is. The credit said 'Rafters', but the song is not listed in tv&film section. I'm sure it got lost in that long list. ;-)
I've seen you in Austin (2001), Munich (2006), hope to see/hear you this summer in Germany.
Keep it up.
wait a minute, here's a better note for me to leave on
i noticed just in the nick of time that the other last comment of mine was somewhat too self depreciating.
if I was an anthropologist, I would find it interesting to do a study about the broader ripple effects on the social culture of a city, of having a high concentration of celebrities and such a high powered entertainment industry, as l.a does.
in particular it would be the effect of the extreme glorification, magnification and amplification of people that the media and modern technology allows. actors larger than life on the big screen, rock stars with greatly amplified voices in the auditorium, images of famous people plastered everywhere, people we see, hear or hear about far more often than we otherwise would. And given the fact that to be so famous (and rich) is generally considered to be amongst the few most ultimate forms of human experiences imaginable, and most people delight in at least getting near to celebrities.... how does that impact on the collective cultural psyche of a city like l.a?
hey but i'm not an anthropologist.
Would like to help, if I can.
I know you are already gone, but if you read this, I want to help, if I can. Not that I'm suggesting you need any (unsolicited advice/help/whatever), excepting that don't we all sometimes? I've noticed that whenever I feel some sort of "upset" or worry building inside of me that I don't know what to do with, that my heart rate and breathing usually have shifted/accelerated along with whatever emotions are going on. I have no idea if this would work for you, but what I do, is take quick breath in, hold it for about a count of 5 or 6, then release it back out again. If things are really bad, then I start cycling the breath--starting with 5 count in and out, then 6 count in and out, then 7 etc. 'til I work my way up to 10. I'm no yoga/stress management expert, but this is a simple thing, that seems to work for me.
Cuban culture week in Doha, Qatar
I did something new friday. I randomly found out that there was a Cuban International festival at the Doha Theater when bringing a good friend $3.00 so she can buy a ring (yes $3 not 30 or 300 just $3 times are hard) So why is she buying a ring? A girls got to do what a girls got to do at times and that shop. Anyway I'm rambling.
I went to bring the money (3) and i found myself listening to some live music from a cuban band and dancers putting on a fabulous performance. I enjoyed myself! Makes me miss home in Florida. Soon soon soon I will be there for the summer.
Happy defrosting and don't loose a sock while drying your clothes. ;)

am i being a smart cultural anthropologist when I.......
am i being a smart cultural anthropologist when I assume that the l.a most commonly represented by the media is a good representation of what l.a is really like as a place to live?
probably not. I know, i have a tendency towards making foolish mistakes. I could probably like a fair few things about l.a myself.
I've been greatly enjoying reading and commenting on your journal posts moby. I'm going to have to take a break from it for a while though, because i have so much work to get done in the next 6 weeks or so that i'm not going to be able to do much more than work, sleep, eat and breath. That ought to keep me out of trouble.
I'll probably have time to at least read your journal now and then anyway.
Best of all wishes to you.
the unedited version of a former comment
You may have read this already if you read a previous comment by me entitled "the dangers of having one's future predicted ahead of time" (under your post about wanting to hang out in l.a more). Then I edited some of it out but changed my mind and decided to re-post the unedited version here -
I told you about my supernatural dictionary didn't I? It's in a comment under your post about obama's speech I do believe. In case you didn't read that, the great news (for word nerds) is i've found a way to use a dictionary as an oracle. i am thoroughly convinced that there's some kind of mysterious way in which the spiritual powers can get messages through to word nerds in this way. in case you did actually read my other comment (or would like to), i won't repeat the details of how to it's done.
Since then, my most faithful of all supernatural dictionaries has continued providing me with the most amazing messages and it's been completely blowing me away.
I believe I mentioned in the earlier comment that I'd asked about the potential for something to take place that I would indeed very much like to have happen. And with my eyes closed, my fingertips managed to find so many words that exactly described it, coupled together with other words like "promising" "forthcoming" and "predetermined" etc. Then I happened to make a reckless little foolish mistake in my life that could (at worst) have altered the course of fate but I didn't really expect it to, because how can a potential that is already supposed to be so "predetermined" and "promising" get broken? Then my supernatural dictionary proceeded to show me lots of words like "breakable", "hopeless", "obsolete", "fobbed off" and all sorts of other ones that clearly indicated failure instead of success.
Well it took me quite a bit of thought power on my part I must say, to figure out what I could do to properly fix the situation, and only after that did the origonal message return (fortunately for me), along with detailed instructions of how to get myself from here to there.
I once read a book about the risks of having one's future predicted. According to the author there was once a man who was living in australia who went to see a psychic. he was told that he was going to be moving to l.a. Shortly after that he got offered a promotion at his place of work. He turned it down thinking "I'm going to be moving to l.a apparently, according to that psychic, so I can't accept that promotion." Turned out that the person who got the job instead of him then got a transfer to l.a and his own destiny had been altered by him turning down the offer of the promotion.
Yeah so there are various risks involved in supposing that something is a guarantee. Maybe it's a bit like when two people marry and promise that they are going to be together for the rest of their lives. Trouble is for some people that results in people taking their
spouse for granted. I've always wondered if there is more chance of a relationship lasting a lifetime if the two people don't get married (even if they both hope and intend to always stay together), because then they know they both have to do whatever it takes to keep the relationship lively, nuturing, stimulating, caring and lovely.
No matter how much we want and intend for certain things to be, there are no real guarantees in life are there... with one exception. there is one thing that is absolutely certain for each and every human being who has ever been born, and that is that one day we die. This is not me intending to paint a grim picture about life, but I think it's worth remembering sometimes that there really is nothing else that is a guarantee. If it happens (whatever we most hope will happen in life), then we're really very lucky indeed!!!!
Getting high and internet
Getting high and internet surfing doesn't mix well.
the oracle is not a type of drug
in case you weren't aware, the oracle is not a type of drug.
and i found out just yesterday, that i'm not the first person to use a dictionary as an oracle. neither am I the only one to have some very interesting results. most people use such things as tarot cards, the i ching, runes, etc.
i've used different kinds of oracles for quite some time and nothing has been quite so amazing as the good old english dictionary has for that, when it comes to perfect precision.
Izzle kizzle, fo' shizzle-not!
1 >> "--did bernie madoff surreptitiously buy greenland when no one was looking?"
^_^ that made me smile, in spite of what a horrible situation it is. i've no idea how it is possible to have spent that much money either! neither however do i especially understand how the world economy continues to function period... oh, wait, i guess it isn't currently (functioning all that well), is it. and i can't imagine what it must be like to be facing retirement, having worked your whole life, thinking that maybe you'll be okay and be told that no, everything you've worked for and all the sacrifices you've made have come to nothing. and as you say, charities and hospitals have been robbed of resources, which means that they can't help as many in need as they could before. not a pebble in the lake this time, a 50 billion dollar boulder. "the power of one person..." yet i think it is reflective of a certain zeitgeist of greed that has been around for some while now... maybe it is on the wane? we can hope?
2 >> "--'oi me old china plate, nice boat race, guv.' [^_^] in the olden days your accent told the world where you were from, both geographically and socio-economically. now it tells the world what you aspire to be, what tv shows you've watched, and the depths of your insecurities"
so...you don't think that it is possible to discover spiritual sympathies with cultural expressive forms that you were not necessarily raised with in your familial context? or to want to change something about yourself in order to garner opportunities that are otherwise closed to you --Eliza Doolittle kind of thing? i recognize that she (eliza) was/is a fictional character, but her concerns were practical, because yes, one's accent said something about "where you came from" and in strictly hierarchal socio-economies, that determined what educational opportunity and professional security you would have a chance to obtain during your life. i guess that yes, those kind of choices may be suggestive of being insecure, but that doesn't mean it's the wrong thing to do, if you want/need to? ...my god. i've actually taken the bait on that one... damn!
3 >>i did something yesterday that was fun and exciting and involved a lot of my music and tv heroes. unfortunately i don't think i can tell you what it is. or was, rather. or will be. i'll find out if i can tell.
...um...what?! i mean, not "what did you do" (not actually sure i want to know) but more like, "i don't think i follow..." well, as long as it was fun, and no injuries were incurred, i guess?
4 >> "i'm defrosting my freezer. it's about time, as my freezer was looking like lex luthor's ice castle/palace. nothing says, 'glamorous and sexy rock and roll' like defrosting a freezer. when i'm done defrosting my freezer i might do laundry. i know, the party never stops."
*\^_^/* (pom-poms, cheering) "put your hands in the air like you just don't caaaarrrrre!" yeah, gotta do the laundry thing today myself.
5>>"have a good weekend."
you too.

Accent and the Media
Moby,
I am a student studying cultural anthropology at Texas Tech Univ. I'm not aware of any such study completely focused on the idea of accent and media; however, there is an article that judges how the internet alone changes some people's communication. It's entitled "Spelling, accent and identity in computer-mediated communication" in the journal English Today, June 2008, Vol. 24 Issue 2. That's a very interesting point though. I hope to go into linguistics, and I'm sure this topic is to be a hot one, if it's not already.
