3 new york photos i took the other day.

3 new york photos i took the other day.

the first is just a small cross-section of the nyc skyline with a big ominous sky.

New York Skyline by Moby

some trivia: as far as i know, the empire state building is as tall as it is because it was originally designed to be a docking station for zeppelins. yup. but apparently it was too windy, and the zeppelin passengers got queasy on disembarkation. so they moved the docking station to new jersey, where the hindenburg exploded, thus kind of ending intercontinental zeppelin travel.

the 2nd picture is a picture i took on van dam street recently.

Van Dam St. by Moby

i tried to make it look as if the picture had been taken 60 years ago, as it's not every day you get to see a 60 year old car on old streets in front of 19th century buildings. if only the people in the background had had the decency to wear homburgs and fedoras.

and the 3rd picture is a sad picture... the end of vesuvio bakery. the last bastion of old soho. well, one of the last bastions of old soho.

Vesuvio Bakery by Moby

vesuvio might have been the first place i ever went to in soho in the early 80's, for cheap whole wheat bread and coffee. it became a pilgrimage, as my friends and i would go to vesuvio for cheap bread and coffee, and then go across the street to rocks in your head record, where we'd sit and watch buzzcocks and joy division music videos. goodbye vesuvio, you will be missed. maybe they'll open a cbgb's merchandise store there.

three pictures of new york. ok,

have a good weekend.

I think I would've liked that.

I didn't know that about the Empire State Building! ^_^ ...trying to imagine passenger airships sailing around the New York skyline... I think I'd like that, if nothing terrible like the Hindenburg explosion ever happened... "Oh no! The next Zeppelin to Soho isn't for another 20 minutes! We better run for it..."

I also feel naive; I read that excerpt from The Villager and the rent seems impossibly high... how could one serve inexpensive anything with rents like that? Still... New York looks interesting, if a little overwhelming. (^_^)/

There is still hope for Vesuvio

I miss their bread too...

(from the Villager)
Vesuvio meltdown
New signage at Vesuvio Bakery in Soho appears to mark the official death knell for the historic Prince St. shop. Despite assurances from ownership about the bakery’s return — it has remained closed for nearly eight months — a large “Store For Rent” sign from a real estate company recently went up in the window.

The bakery’s owner, Andrew Veniopoulos, said that after he finally located a tenant to revive Vesuvio late last year, the building’s landlord asked him to surrender his current lease in order to a sign a new, 10-year lease. Veniopoulos agreed, but the landlord subsequently refused to accept the new tenant and placed the “For Rent” sign in the window.

“Apparently, they bamboozled me,” Veniopoulos claimed. “They don’t want a bakery there anymore. They want to do retail.”

Veniopoulos added that the new baker had been willing to pay more than the current $5,500 a month rent, but that the landlord, Lawrence Properties, required $10,000 a month and an entirely new lease.

Now, Veniopolous is taking the building owner court to have his lease returned so he can reopen the space as Vesuvio.

“They’ve been lying to me for about a year now,” Veniopoulos said of his attempts to bring a new tenant into the space while simultaneously working to fix up the store’s ailing plumbing system. “I’ve tried to be kind. This is an outright lie.”

The bakery was owned by the “Mayor of Greenwich Village” Tony Dapolito before his death in 2003, and has been operated since by Venipoulos, who also works for the real-estate brokerage Bapple located across the street.

“After 89 years it’s come to this,” Veniopoulos said. “I just don’t understand it.”

yes

I said I was going to run away to New York when I was a teen. These photos almost make me regret not doing it.

oldschool...

The second image is perfectly captured. Beautiful, timeless, precious...Had it not been for the clothes of the by-passers, one could have been absorbed by the atmosphere and fall for it as a '40s picture.

I miss NYC with a vengeance, but will hopefully be back there in May. Update your summer performances! ;) The news section has not been updated in eons. People need to know if you'll do DJ set or live performance promoting the material to be released in June.

Thanks much!
