'What I Want for You — and Every Child
in America'
By President-elect Barack Obama
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me‚-about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.
I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential-schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college-even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.
Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country‚-but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free‚-that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.
That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better‚-and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.
I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much‚-although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.
These are the things I want for you‚-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
Love, Dad
... and outside America ?
Hello to all, dear friends of soul.
I used to come to the boards, a long time ago, searching for you, your spirit, the one I knew existed, on your side of the ocean. And tonight I needed to come again. Because I'm so sad. Please, believe that this dream is universal and that fathers, everywhere, wish this for their children. As the world watched, hundreds of bombs, even bombs like napalm, with phosphorus, which should not be used "even on military targets when they are civilians near them" (CCWC)were falling on one of the most populated area of the world. Gaza. A place where 56% of the inhabitants are children under 15. I dream that everybody tonight realize that in Gaza, as they are sleeping in a sort of "truce" after the hellish nighmare they suffered, the children are going to cry because of nightmares as black as eyes of hell, between shattered families, homes and dreams.
Because tonight, as you might know, I'm as always, like everybody on this planet, linked with your Presidents, even if I'm no Palestinian, or no American, but only a mixed blooded woman ... mother, who cries.
Tonight I'm thinking of a beautiful young man, who chose to take a pen instead of a gun, you know the wonderful song "in the ghetto" from Elvis ... I would like to take him in my arms, in my womb, just so he could come back to life in another world. A world where nobody is simply an angel because he is most beautiful than anybody simply in chosing peace, and hope, in a world so full of blindness to sadness and misery.
I beg you pardon. But I cried too of hope, happiness, and admired you all, when you chose this wonderful man and writer as President. Respectfully and with Love and so much Hope, for all the children of this world.
If you say nope to hope give me a rope

Re: public letter from pres elect obama
Moby,
Thanks for sharing obama’s open letter to his girls. His girls may be a little too young to fully appreciate it, but I think that in time they will grow to appreciate their father’s words more as they get older and more experienced. Since it WAS an open letter, I believe he was speaking to us all as if we were all his children. It certainly came across like one of his speeches. Maybe he just talks that way all the time, who knows.
I read Yohami’s input and can understand his concerns. As I have indicated before, it is my hope that obama’s administration will not be run in a “politics as usual” manner. However, only time will tell.
In direct response to Yohami’s comments regarding obama’s letter, I can only say that: As obama seems to be speaking to us all, it appears that he is telling us that just because he is a man of peace and negotiation, he is not afraid to go to war over our freedom. Not a surprising remark since real men of peace and negotiation are frowned upon by many as being weak and it is the FEAR of those people of being attacked by other nations that make them look at it this way. So it seems obama is trying to assure those people that he will not be weak if someone attacks us, or if our freedom is threatened in any way.
Yohami asks “Is this just the justification for another war, this one sweeter because we get to serve our children”… My thought on that is: I don’t think that was obama’s intention. However, the universe is yin AND yang. Unfortunately, I believe that there is no peace without war, no life without death, no contentment without misery. Our typical human nature is to be either passive or aggressive. The passive ones make peace and the aggressive ones make war. I don’t believe that there will ever be a time when there are only passive people on this planet and because of this, we will never be able to stop someone from going to war against someone else. War is not my wish, peace is my wish, but I have to be realistic in that the rest of the world will never agree with my sense of how to live. Only SOME of the world will see it my way. We can only hope that with a man of peace in the Whitehouse, we will be able to sway the better part of the world to lean towards peace and not war.
As far as Yohami’s thought that we are “already giving a lot and being given nothing in return, but debt”, I could certainly generally agree with his statement as I am out of work and seeking employment myself, but I cannot allow myself to be bitter about that. I CHOOSE to be positive about my search as well as my hope that obama will give more than just words to boost our economy and put us all back to work as soon as possible. I have to hang onto that hope because it’s the alternative that gives me “nightmare goosebumps” as Yohami put it.
I don’t think that obama’s open letter is “crap” (I’m certainly hoping not), which is what Yohami seems to think it might be if obama is preparing us for more war and even harder times. However, I am reserving judgment until his administration proves that he’s more than just the author of touching words. So my sentiment for now is “We’ll see”. Obama needs time to try to turn this miserable mess of a republican failure around.
Other than that, I thought the letter was a good attempt at bolstering everyone’s spirits and again, it is my hope that it means that good things lie ahead for us all.
We’ll see.
Re: Dee
I hope the same. The letter certainly evoques good emotions, Im just trying to read the logic behind the lines since thats a good thing to do given the scenario. Obama executed a very, very good campaign and Im happy he won. With everyone exhalted, its a perfect time to do things right and switch everything up, however its also the perfect time to really screw things up like, hey, almost every other time in history. So we should stay awake, I will.
Wow what a touching letter.
Wow what a touching letter. For the first time in 8 years I feel proud to say that our nation voted this man in. He is such a compassionate leader and I can't wait to see how he will turn this country around. You would NEVER see a letter like this from good ol' W to his twin daughters.

I read this yesterday, and
I read this yesterday, and it's things like this that make it really hard to believe that this amazing, intelligent and kind man is going to be our president. It still shocks me every time I think about it.
Awwwwww, what a special letter, so dear......
Thank you so much for sharing this darling. Pres. Obama has a wonderful way of expressing himself in such a heartfelt and crucial manner. That letter is a testament of a wonderful Father to his Children and to his Nation. I hope that all of the school teachers in the USA read that letter to their students. It is so lovely. As I was reading it I couldn't help but feel a tug at my heart. Being a parent myself, I feel so much of what our dear President has to say. One of my many favorite parts of this golden letter is:
"Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential."
I so need to remember this in my own life. It is so easy to get pre-occupied with ones own needs and wants, because living day to day striving and working hard to make ends meet and be a success in ever realm can be ever so difficult as life tests us with complications all the time and it can be so difficult not to become self absorbed with all of such....not because we are in essence self absorbed, but because the stress and worry of things make it difficult not to look outside of our own real life dramas, tribulations, lessons and stepping stones.
And Barack said
"These are the things I want for you‚-to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have."
Awwwww, as my son Brayden is Autitic, this portion of the letter especially touched my heart as he wants 'every' chld to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive. Smiles.
This letter gave me happy tears. Thank you soooooo much for sharing it Sweetheart.
I Love *You*, you mean the world to me.
Love,
Rachelle, Lil Brayden & Pets

I love the start but I dont get it. Is this just the justification for another war, this one sweeter because we get to serve our children, we discover the best of our potential by serving a cause higher than ourselves, we get to give up our ideals and our own making our way trough the world but that is what makes this nation great, to which we have to give something in return because of all it has given to us? if so, its all crap. And people is already giving a lot and being given nothing in return, but debt. Sorry bro, stuff like this gives me nightmare goosebumps.
