as i write this it's 7pm in nyc and i was just watching the news and there was a story about how thousands and thousands of people are stranded in airports and train and bus stations. oof, that's terrible. being stranded in o'hare and having sbarro for breakfast, lunch, and dinner sounds awful at the best of times, but during the holidays?
again: oof. but on a happier note, i hope that you're somewhere nice with people you like, and i hope that you're lucky and that you're not stranded in an airport or bus station.
i'm in chinatown for christmas, and it's a bit disconcerting, as chinatown on december 24th and 25th is exactly the same as chinatown on december 23rd and 26th. tomorrow for christmas i'm going to go for a long walk through chinatown, maybe getting vegan dim sum before heading to work at my studio. the early christmas gift from the weather gods (weather sounds less mundane when it's the province of the gods) is that it's bizarrely warm in nyc. i'm sure it's just a momentary reprieve, but tonight is 60 degrees, as opposed to 2 days ago when it was -10 with wind chill.

Bummed about the loss of the boards
Hi Moby, Happy New Year.
Just wanted to chime in here about the loss of the boards. It was a fun place to connect, reach out, learn, laugh, and generally waste time .... free entertainment.
I'd usually just come around when I was depressed, and it helped me to feel just a little less alone. I've even made some IRL friends here. I wish you'd reconsider. I'd even volunteer some time to "admin" it, there'd probably be others who would take on some of that too.
Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

Mr. Moby , After your Concert in Chile in 2005 , I became member of the boards and thanks to that I have been lucky enough to met the most amazing , funny , creative people there. I am happy to have been part of such a great community and the only one reason that kept me posting there during this 3 years was only because the community itself , the great people there .
I can understand the attachment of people that are not agree with the end of the boards , but at the same time , I think that we were just use to click in the Mo' boards ,it was our place , we met thank to your place , but honestly almost nothing was related to, your Music , Journal entries , etc , not even an interaction with you ... so in conclusion the only thing related to Moby it was just the name ,and well, the majority of us are actually your fans .but what I am trying to say in my broken english is that I think it's completely logic to close the boards , people that really want to talk about you and make comments , they have already this place , myspace and facebook . At the same time the boards were getting an unfriendly place , where the majority of us where afraid to post anything personal (like in the old times) bc of the nastiness and obsessive animosity ,harassment and hatred that was present . fortunately , after the announcement of the board demise , and thank to the greatness of a fellow boardie , we already are in a " better place " , where we are protected from the spam and craziness , and now the community it's more alive than ever , the main point is that we were the ones that made Moby's boards such a great place, so it really doesn't matter the boards name or the domain ,we still can keep ourself in touch , share our lifes , get support and continue have the most hysterical LOLZ !!!

I've read a couple of entries about these moby boards and I want to know more about them. What was the difference between them and this journal? I take it that there was a bit more interaction on Moby's part in the boards? I'm relatively new to this journal, but I gather from the comments that moby doesn't really get involved here?
On a brighter note, I'd like to wish all of you Happy Hogmanay* and Ne'erday*, and as we Scots say "Lang may yer lumb reek".*

The Moby boards existed for nearly a decade. It was a message board on this website, possibly the only celebrity message board on the internet that had total freedom of speech and close to zero censorship. It had a pretty thriving community of Moby fans, and people who had otherwise happened to stumble across the place and ended up staying. The old Mobester used be somewhat involved in our community. He would talk to us through his journal, and even threw a concert for us once in NYC.
Then he became... should I say a MySpace/FaceBook slut? And forgot about us. The link to the boards was removed from his flashy new website. But the boards remained, left out in the cold, cut off from the rest of the world. The community kept on living, but it soon turned into a cold, bitter, dark place. Until one day, very recently, when it was announced that the boards were to be closed down. We all said our goodbyes, packed our bags, and moved on. It was clear that we were no longer wanted... but it was also clear that it wasn't Moby's decision.
Now we ask. Wtf, man? Why the cold shoulder? You could at least have told us to fuck off yourself, and not have one of your "people" do it. Especially not Rob the admin, whom I might add, sucked a monkey's butt with a very, very thin straw.

Dear Mr Moby,
I do not believe I can say this better than mangymutt.
Boards were... They gathered a group of amazing individuals together who would have not ever known each others existence. They were a place where we got to know Moby as more than just some guy, who makes music. The boards made him feel that much closer, more human and more approachable. And the occasional journal comments to our posts, well made us feel like we were just not some random people posting on a random message board.
I don't know if it was Moby himself who thought this new moby.com is the fucken coolest thing ever. I really hope is was some asshole trying to get moby more visibility and more cash. With his myspace, facebook and livejournal entry jazz, I bet he does not even read his comments.
Anyhow, I admire Mr Moby. He was, perhaps still is, this guy who made awesome music, had very interesting views of the world, and once upon a time he had time and interest towards his fans.
What I am trying to say, regardless of my bitter tone... Thank you for everything, and that I really just miss the flashy envelope.
I'll probably still keep reading Mobys journals, since they annoyingly fill my livejournal friends page, but moby.com is no longer home.

Just so all of you loyal journal posters know, Moby does not really care about you.
I can see why and fully agree with why the boards should have been taken down, but he let a few bad seeds make him abandon his loyal fans there without a bat of an eye.
There was a unique group of people there and now we are all split off and no matter where we go, there will never be a place quite like that one.
I am not asking that the boards be brought back up, but it would be nice if he actually took a notice to the loss of something that has been such a big influence in all of our lives. Then again, he obviously doesn't care.

Dear Moby,
I speak on behalf of the ones you abandoned and left out in the cold. We've been posting on your message boards for nearly a decade now. We've had our ups and downs, there have been some suicide and rape incidents... but there has also been a lot of fun, laughter and love. Numerous people have found love on your message boards, and moved across land and oceans to be with each other. Point is, we've kept your boards alive, until the day you removed the link from your website. From that point on, we were left in a sort of twilight zone, and it was recently announced that the boards were going to close down due to insufficient funding. We've come to accept this, and agreed that it might be best, after all, for the boards to burn in hell... for all eternity.
But, what makes us slightly sad is that you haven't addressed the death of the boards. We used to be friends at one point, we even defended you when the boards were flooded by brainless Eminem fans. And remember that one time, when you threw a boardie show for us in NYC? Yeah? Well, we were all there. For you. So if you could please stop snorthing coke for a few minutes, and put your hookers on hold, it would be very nice of you to give a shout out to your loyal boardies, whom you've so heartlessly abandoned.

Your "Cribs" presentation, and a possibly interesting question
Hello Mr. Hall,
My name is Alan Collinge from Seattle.
I frankly know little about you, and almost never watch MTV- Im not sure what the M even stands for anymore...is it Marketing or Meaningless?:)
So I was very refreshed to catch you during a “Cribs marathon” this morning (a welcome relief from the barrage of stripper poles, large vehicles, and other ridiculous items that younger artists apparently use now to express their power!) I am a former Caltech/JPL scientist, so I appreciate the telescope (although it would probably be better on the rooftop).
I was intrigued and skeptical that a personality and temperament like yours could survive and thrive in the popular music industry. I did some cursory research, and was compelled to write you for a very specific purpose.
In 2005, I started a political movement in this country regarding student loans (see Studentloanjustice.org). Actually, it really was just a website, but it has become a legitmate grassroots struggle. I now run a national organization comprising 4000 depressed, indebted and marginalized citizens, and we are attempting to convince Congress to return some semblance of fairness and justice to the citizens. Unfortunately, I am working directly against the financial interests of some very large financial institutions, like Sallie Mae.
When I was the featured guest in the top story on 60 Minutes in 2006, Sallie Mae declined to be interviewed, yet they frequently slam me in the press in really dirty, and personal ways, which sucks really hard. So it is a serious battle I am engaged in. If you care to see how the industry is attacking me, just google me for two seconds. ugh.
Me and my ragtag group have also been featured in front page stories in The New York Times, W Post, SF Chronicle, LA Times, Boston Herald etc, etc... We have a functioning PAC, and I just finished writing a book on the subject for Beacon Press (Boston). Oh. I’m also one of seven "Heroes" of 2008 according to CNN/Money Magazine (silly but true).
So Richard/Moby: I am humbly seeking an intelligent musician who might have a unique understanding/interest of/in this topic, and might consider writing a song that captures the pain. I know no musicians, and so I am hoping that you might find a reason to empathize, and lend an assist by way of a referral.
The song would be used in a documentary being produced in San Francisco as we speak (SF Film Institute), but would certainly be highly interesting to a good portion of the 20 million or so people in this country whose lives have been decimated by an industry that is far more predatory than even the home mortgage industry (I make and support this argument clearly and convincingly on the website).

what is saturnalia?
I hope you got some good work done that you were especially pleased with, but if it so happens that you didn't, I hope that me hoping you did will not make you feel bad at all. you know how it is that stating hopes and wishes for others on birthdays and christmas and wedding days etc (or just afterwards retrospectively) seems like the thing to do, well I do sometimes wonder if the person didn't happen to have the best birthday/christmas/saturnalia/wedding whether stating that one hopes it was awesome and fabulous and superb, could actually result in the person feeling even more disappointed that the occassion was not quite as good as she/he had him/herself hoped.
i didn't used to celebrate christmas, for years and years, for reasons i won't go into here. i used to try my best to make it another ordinary day which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. in the last 5 years i've gotten back into celebrating christmas with my family and have come to quite like it again, but i can relate to doing ordinary things (whatever you do on most other days) on the 25th of december as well.
i read a copy of an interview of you that was done for some magazine recently in which you mentioned that your next album is going to be really personal and melodic and beautiful. i'm very much looking forward to it.

It's the day after Christmas and mine was wonderful. I hope yours was good too. Of course, we had the same weather out here in Jersey as you did in NYC. It made driving to my Christmas destination easier and because it was so cold earlier in the week there was still plenty of snow on the ground. That always makes for a lovely Christmas (just like the song). It was wonderful spending time with my friends. I haven't seen them in a while since they are always busy with their theater commitments. We swapped stories and had a lot of laughs. We played a couple of games, ate too much all day (including a wonderfully prepared meal) and gifts were handed out. All in all it was a pleasant day with great people.
