i've lived in the lower east side for almost 20 years now, but recently i moved to the depths of chinatown in manhattan.
i love it there, it's without question my favorite part of new york city. not necessarily the part of chinatown for tourists, but the deeper, murkier parts of chinatown where i'm invariably the only person on the street who doesn't speak mandarin or cantonese. the only downsides to living in chinatown are:
1-the smell of the garbage on sunday night, which is bad enough to make you want to stuff handgrenades in your nose and blow your face off just so you don't have to smell the putrefying bags of whatever it is they're throwing away.
2-the abundance of dead and almost dead animals in the windows of the restaurants. i do have to say that living in chinatown makes me even more solid in my veganism (i've been a vegan now for 21 years or so).
i love my neighborhood, but seeing a plate of food like:

makes it pretty easy to remain vegan. i don't even know what type of fish this is, or was. some prehistoric fish made out of moldy concrete? the missing link? the first fish to venture out of the primordial stew? some people might be concerned that i'm giving away my address by saying that i'm living in chinatown. that clearly means that you haven't spent a whole lot of time in chinatown, as it's a byzantine maze that even i get lost in.
see, this is what happens when political campaigns end, i write blogs about primordial fish and garbage bags filled with effluvia. regarding politics, though, i do find it funny that some people in the gop are still acting as if the campaign was on-going. sarah palin recently was talking about bill ayers, for instance. do you think some well-intentioned person in her family or close circle of friends could let her know that the campaign is actually over?
oh, and thanks to the people who came down to santos the other night to support the issue fundraiser.

Surviving in Chinatown.
Oh come on! Buddha Bodai, Wild Ginger, May-Wah, Veg dim sum house, the dumpling place, the phenomenal array of veges on the stalls, fresh tofu stands and Babycake all within a few blocks... Life ain't that bad down there. And, not to be an ass but the language spoken in deep dark Chinatown isn't so much Mandarin or Cantonese but Fujianese or more precisely Min. Enjoy the new place!
so I'm curious...
what is it about chinatown that makes it without question your favorite part of new york city? after reading this, i now know what you don't like about the place, and it would be quite interesting to read about what you do so much like about it.
I would also quite like to know what kinds of things you might get up to if you are alone at home and aren't making music that day/night.
plus I want to know what the most interesting scrabble word you have recently created is (presuming you still play like to play scrabble)
and what colour/s your favourite socks are
rohhh
roohhh, my girlfriend and i want to go to new york in automn 09' to go at teany and wanted to view your appartment in the lower east side... we are lost now we can't make a photo with your appartment behind us :(
so i wish i wish i wish that we'll see you at teany because we plan to go eat 7 times a week for the two weeks of our trip!! :)
ps: this fish seems like ill fish! i prefer the real, the original "mr. fish" in your "18" and "hotel" DVD!!! :D

cat fish off canal
between the traffic noise, massive tour buses carrying transplants or illegals from other chinatowns and pasty-white annoying tourists from the midwest haggling over prices on knock-off gucci bags, you can still find vestiges of old chinatown even though the ghost shadows and the flying dragons have ventured into legitimate enterprises (i think).
on mott street, you can order a piping hot bowl of chinese congee (vegan) at big wong's for like $2.
on pell street is the famous vegetarian dim sum place where every williamsburg hipster and upper-west side academic visit every week.
on bayard street is the original chinatown ice cream factory where i believe they serve a soy variety.
if you're still in the market for drum machines or old rane/numark mixers, there are a number of vendors selling overstock or refurbished equipment on canal street.
don't ask me about massage parlors though. wouldn't know anything about them.
the fish in the picture is fried cat fish with sweet and sour sauce.
Wow. Someone would have to
Wow. Someone would have to be a very brave soul to eat that.
I love that Sarah is suddenly speaking out when during the campaign they barely let her give an interview. Especially after that hilarious Katie Couric one. And she's blaming all the bad press about her on bloggers sitting in their pajamas in their parent's basement trying to dig stuff up on her.
She's the most hilarious [and annoying] thing to happen to politics in a long, long time. But she doesn't bother me quite as much since you know.. we won. :]

I have to totally agree with you on the things hanging in the windows in Chinatown, I've spent some time there and I'm convinced half those fish are from prehistoric times, haha. I'm no vegan but god does that picture make me want to consider it.

Sole Vegan in ChinaTown?
Hey Moby, would it be right to say you're the only Vegan (Or Vegetarian) in ChinaTown? Most probably yes.
Disco Lies was the kind of story only you can produce, and that means a lot. Looking forward to more great music from you in 2009!
Btw, I am sure you will have a lot to write within politics once Obama starts office...lots of stuff has been pending.
