a few months ago we had a contest for aspiring video directors to make a video for 'ooh yeah'. most of the submissions were actually really good, and it was hard to pick a winner. but we picked a winner, and here's his winning video.

differences between pornography and what I'd call true erotica
I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about pornography and the differences between that and what I'd call real erotica. Actually the reason that I was having the discussion with her in the first place was because I know you consider pornography to be cool. I already knew that before watching this video because I remember a journal entry of yours from way back in 2001 or 2002 when you were saying that you thought European coins ought to have images of porn stars on them rather than images of old bridges.
I've never got into watching pornographic films so I can't speak from the point of view of knowing in a whole lot of detail what much of they often consist of exactly (apart from the obvious factor of porn featuring sex scenes), but I did suspect that pornography generally depicts the type of sex that is disconnected from emotions, love and authentic human relationships. I also suspected that it depicts scenes of women (and men) being very easily accessable for sex (the man delivers a pizza and gets sex without even having a so much as a conversation with the women first). I did wonder whether the porn stars speak much or at all in pornographic films, so it's interesting to see "the speechlessness of porn stars" getting mentioned in another comment here.
Words can be very erotic. Obviously sexually explicit films and videos, no matter how short they are, can easily depict erotica that is infused with at least a hint of love, whether that is the kind of love that happens in intimate relationships, or more the general kind of love, awe and appreication of the beauty of life in human bodies which do actually embody emotion and spirit.
I don't think that it is always necessary to have a relationship with someone over any length time to be able to have the kind of sex that impacts on you at much more than a purely physical level. I'm not altogether convinced that sex which is purely for physical pleasure and is completely disconnected from anything in the way of heart and soul is truly good for anyone. I know that sexual addiction is really rife in our society, and I tend to suspect that emotionally disconnected sex which is for the purpose of physical pleasure only is often times, probably serving addiction.
I believe that pornography generally serves sexual addiction and I'm not convinced that it is ultimately healthy.
On the other hand I think that explicit erotica of the kind that effects people at other levels as well can be something really good. Also if watching footage containing explicit sex scenes can lead people to be that much more free and creative in their own sex lives, that can be a good thing too.
and in a word...
the one word that featured in that video -
army
written very much bold
one word that encapsulates so much of what the underlying reasons are as to why many people (especially a lot of men) in our society favour emotionally disconnected sex.
when we really feel something, we're vulnerable to the risk of having to feel many other things as well. such is in nature of human emotion. one feeling linking in to a miriad of other feelings.
it is advantageous for men who work for the army to not to have to feel of course. having emotions whilst killing someone might not make it easier to kill the next person or drop the next bomb. there are so many other aspects of the ways in which our society runs that require people to be disconnected from their emotions. factory farming is another good example. unlimited economic growth at the obvious expense of the environment and future generations.
and the sex industry gives people nice easy access to sensations that don't touch in on those feelings that might make people have to feel more about life in general.
however i know that you're not in the army and that you are really not a big supporter of war. i know that you do care about life, that you do care to have some feelings about it all. quite a bit of your music demonstrates that, and your level of support for animal rights demonstrates it, plenty of things you have written into your journal here and there. you never did strike me so much as being an emotionally disconnected kind of person.
so i wonder what it is that pornography does for you? if my theory about pornography is right and you're into it enough to select a video like that to go together with a (really good) piece of music of yours, does that mean that there are actually some kinds of feelings that you like to easily be able to disconnect from these days?
if that's true, that's sad.
having said all that....
a few images in this video did contribute to me feeling turned on today.
i can relate to sexual imagery that contains no element of erotic love as being simply fun and a turn on to watch, but pornography tends to have undercurrents of something else to it as well, as that video does.... undercurrents of a culture with a particular set of values and codes of conduct etc, and it's that value system that i don't really like and can't easily relate to you being so into.
First of all I really liked
First of all I really liked the idea of creating a contest to find out the best ideas for a video. Chapeau bas!
The video is a kind of freaky and Ok, I laughed, too:).
I am just a bit worried that the lack of songtext and the speechlessness of porn stars matches perfectly.. ooh yeah;)
Moby, thanx a lot for the spoiler;)
Ooh Yeah
I enjoyed hearing the song, and getting a good laugh from the video, which cracked me up.
Just heard about the Columbia county show (we just went to the Ulster county fundraiser), we live up this way now- a little surprised we didn't hear any advance press over here in Ulster county about that gig- Tony could have gotten it out to appropriate press outlets-
Hope to go as there are not enough of this genre of music/dance event for me up here, but if not due to prior commitments, have a great time in Hudson.

wow
Gosh Moby, I really love the depth and significance you encourage by promoting this video. It means so much to women to be simply sex objects with underwear stuck up our butts. Also to see the porn genre exploited in such a fun and campy way reminds me of what..?..oh yeah, the new Diesel ad campaign. which sickened me too. Your new voice I am hearing in the media is really making me wonder just who are you trying to please?

Yes I do recall seeing this
My congratulations goes out again to the director and actors and actresses of this music video. It is very funny!!!
The mini car reminds me of New Zealand. There are many people with mini's over there. Also in the United Kingdom. You don't see many of those here in the United States.
