i want to stop writing about politics for a while, really i do.
but i just read that when sarah palin was a mayor in alaska she passed
legislation that billed rape victims for the 'rape kits' used to collect forensic evidence at the scene of the crime.
so, a woman is raped in sara palin's town, and the rape victim, thanks to sarah palin's
legislation, has to pay the cost of the evidence collection.
it amazes me that women support sarah palin when palin opposes abortions
for rape and incest victims and also passed legislation billing rape victims
for the police/forensic work done at the scene of the crime.
it's a terrible time here in the u.s when an unqualified and deeply unethical(not
to mention crazy, as sarah palin also believes that dinosaurs and humans
walked the earth at the same time)woman like
sarah palin could be an inch away from being president of the united states.

Sarah Palin

Hi everyone, first, all my apologize for my english, i'm french.
I'm following your elections, and it's quiet scary..Ours is not really nice too, but it's too much for only one woman, death sentence, weapons, war, contraceptive...Then her daughter is still pregnant... This woman is the Mc Cain's puppet, as Bush is a puppet too... I really hope for your great country that Obama will win that....You got my support ;)

DON'T STOP

don't stop!
because it's beyond belief.

DON'T STOP

don't stop!

i was trying to practice restraint and not respond to this but

it comes as no surprise that a fundamentalist conservative like Sarah Palin would want to punish rape victims. billing rape victims for 'rape kits' is inexcusable. yet they can be punished by so-called liberals too. unfortunately, there still exists a widespread and pervasive belief that women who are raped were asking for it or deserved it, no matter what the circumstances were. and it is disgusting beyond belief that anyone who is pro-life, whether they are conservative or liberal, would deny a woman the right to abort the child of her rapist. i hope that Sarah Palin, her daughters or any other woman who shares her pro-life agenda will NEVER be raped (no man, woman or child should ever have to experience that sort of trauma, and it is a sad fact that it does happen more often than we would like to believe) and placed in that position. you really have to lack any sensitivity or compassion to adhere to such a rigid stance. it makes me angry that so many rape victims aren't taken seriously, aren't believed, are blamed and made to feel ashamed as if it were their fault and are told to "get over it" as if it weren't a horribly invasive crime. some people will never understand the repercussions for the victim.

and i think that it is extremely judgmental of any woman

who holds the pro-life position to consider women who have had abortions to be murderers. i have seen that actually being stated in response to one of your journal entries and i was appalled. and i wasn't the only one. i personally would never want to associate with someone who made such a statement, because it not only ignorant, but it is insulting and offensive to women who have made a personal choice which doesn't involve the opinion of anyone else. i assume it is okay then to berate a single mother who has a child with an unsuitable father and requires public assistance to survive. because that is a choice that some women would not make.

P.S.

If You were The Boss... which team would you hire?

With America facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crisis, bank foreclosures, etc. etc., this is an unusually critical election year.

Let's look at the educational background of the candidates and see what they bring to the job:

Barack Obama:
Occidental College - Two years.
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) (Attorney), (Magna Cum Laude)

Joseph Biden:
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.) (Attorney)

VS.

John McCain :
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that, like George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)

Sarah Palin:
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism

Now, which team are you going to hire to lead the most influential nation in the world facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crisis, bank foreclosures, highest unemployment since the Great Depression , .... job market

a more astute and savvy employer would consider all aspects of a candidate's credentials including professional work experience (a glaring omission in your comparison), applicable skills and sound proposals.

moreover, typical blue chip companies, bulge bracket investment banks, big four accounting firms, management consulting firms and hi tech juggernauts would also consider all viable candidates, not just two, if the role were really imperative to growth and success of the company.

considering the two you presented, i would opt not to hire either based on their "experience". the former has far too little of it while the latter has too much of it (which can harm productivity and objectivity). further "background check" would reveal far too many embarrassing events in the candidate's past that would exclude the average person from the hiring process.

the open market can, i believe, produce more worthy candidates for our attention and leadership in the oval office.

job duties include: managing the massive bureaucracy, making the tough decisions, offering sound innovative solutions to complex issues, improving our diplomatic standing in the world which the predescessor has squadered, finding new sources of renewable and non-renewable energy, opening an independent investigation into the event surrounding 9/11

any person of average intelligence (if you're honestly paying attention) would agree that neither obama or mccain has been inspiring in this regard.

if companies relied on hiring the "lesser of two evils", they would lose marketshare to the competition. and that's exactly what's happened in recent years in this corporation called the u.s.a. (sounding like gecko here).

letter from anchorage woman lyn lear:

[The] Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage . Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women, or men. I had no idea what to expect.

The rally was organized by a small group of women, talking over coffee. It made me wonder what other things have started with small groups of women talking over coffee. It's probably an impressive list. These women hatched the plan, printed up flyers, posted them around town, and sent notices to local media outlets. One of those media outlets was KBYR radio, home of Eddie Burke, a long-time uber-conservative Anchorage talk show host. Turns out that Eddie Burke not only announced the rally, but called the people who planned to attend the rally "a bunch of socialist baby-killing maggots", and read the home phone numbers of the organizers aloud over the air, urging listeners to call and tell them what they thought. The women, of course, received some nasty, harassing and threatening messages.

I felt a bit apprehensive. I'd been disappointed before by the turnout at other rallies. Basically, in Anchorage , if you can get 25 people to show up at an event, it's a success. So, I thought to myself, if we can actually get 100 people there that aren't sent by Eddie Burke, we'll be doing good. A real statement will have been made. I confess, I still had a mental image of 15 demonstrators surrounded by hundreds of menacing "socialist baby-killing maggot" haters.

It's a good thing I wasn't tailgating when I saw the crowd in front of the library or I would have ended up in somebody's trunk. When I got there, about 20 minutes early, the line of sign wavers stretched the full length of the library grounds, along the edge of the road, 6 or 7 people deep! I could hardly find a place to park. I nabbed one of the last spots in the library lot, and as I got out of the car and started walking, people seemed to join in from every direction, carrying signs.

Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage . The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn't honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn't happen here.

Then, the infamous Eddie Burke showed up. He tried to talk to the media, and was instantly surrounded by a group of 20 people who started shouting O-BA-MA so loud he couldn't be heard. Then passing cars started honking in a rhythmic pattern of 3, like the Obama chant, while the crowd cheered, hooted and waved their signs high.

So, if you've been doing the math. Yes. The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin's rally that got all the national media coverage! So take heart, sit back, and enjoy the photo gallery. Feel free to spread the pictures around to anyone who needs to know that Sarah Palin most definitely does not speak for all Alaskans. The citizens of Alaska , who know her best, have things to say.

Palin has seemingly made alot of poor decisions and I do hope that will show the majority of votes that she is not trustworthy for the position of Vice President of the United States.

Palin

This is my first time here and I came here because I heard some of Moby's music and thought it was great.

I am not sure if anyone here will believe me, but I wanted to say something about Palin that was really surprising to me. I tend to be, for a lack of a better word, conservative on most subjects. However, my aunt and uncle, who seem to be farther left than most of the people commenting here, actually love Palin, and are angry that she might be taken away from Alaska. They live in Wasilla, the town Palin was mayor of, they are active in politics, and know Palin personally.

No one was more surprised than me to hear those words come from their mouths. She may not be as bad as many people say she is.

Dear Moby

Please don´t stop with your political blogs. You are providing great info and a substantiated point of view. All this and great music, too... I hope you perform at the Obama/Biden victory celebration. I will be the guy dancing in the front row. You ¨rock the party¨...

My perhaps feeble attempt to answer

1. From Obama's website:

Obama Has Consistently Said He Would Support A Patriot Act That Would Strengthen Civil Liberties Without Sacrificing The Tools That Law Enforcement Needs To Keep Us Safe

Obama Said That the Senate Compromise on the PATRIOT Act Was "Far From Perfect" But Modestly Improved the Original Law By Strengthening Civil Liberties Without Sacrificing the Tools That Law Enforcement Needs to Keep Us Safe.

2. Joe Biden didn't get the nickname "Fightin Joe Biden" by being a Washington Insider. Biden was picked because he provides contrast for Obama, another point of view and experience.

3. It would have put him at a distinct disadvantage to the McCain campaign and the GOP finance machine. Using public financing actually gives him a chance to win.

4. No candidate and most all of congress do not understand the economy or the markets. It's all (mostly) rhetoric. I do have confidence in Obama's ability to pick appointees and economic advisers. Did you see what McCain's top economic adviser (Carly Fiorina) said the other day?

5. We work with what we have. If you don't like the policies of Bush or the GOP, voting for Bob Barr or another independent isn't going to help you. You're just going to cement the GOPs position. Until the system is made more fair and an independent has a real chance, you vote for one of the two sides that you most agree with. Personally I'm a centrist I vote right when I think the country has gone too far left and I vote left when I think the country has gone too far right. We're way, way too far right at this point.

6. One step at a time. Putting on a tin foil hat and calling for Bush to be thrown in prison won't win votes. Leave that to Kucinich.

elDizzle

eldizzle

eldizzle,

thank you for answering the questions i presented honestly and intelligently. it's refreshing to read a post without the virulent name-calling and irrational hatred.

that said, you've made some interesting observations.

1. what obama has stated on his website and in public speeches and what's actually legally stated in patriot act ii are two very different things. it's contradictory in other words.

example: provisions allow for secret arrests, no due process, no miranda rights, no adherence to consitutional rights, etc. for an indefinite period of time in undisclosed locations without access to bail or attorney client confidentiality without wire-tapping involved, etc.

you want to know the most egregious aspect of patriot act ii?

section 501 amends section 349 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

what does this mean?

if the govn't believes/suspects that you are in collusion with a hostile foreign govn't, it has the authority to revoke your citizenship in the u.s. regardless of how credible, minute and weak the evidence is.

an example of this is if you unknowingly make a charitable donation that has dubious ties to foreign enemies, you are prime target for arrest.

mccarthy would blush at what america has become--a police state.

2. joe biden is a decent choice as a constrasting, elder statesmen in the obama camp but if you're going to run a campaign on the banner of "change" why enlist someone who a) who is a perennially washington insider and b) questions your experience and ability to lead?

most people don't know who Zbigniew Brzezinski is but investigate his dealings with the trilateral commission. read his book "the grand chessboard". scary stuff!

obama has already tapped this guy to be his foreign policy advisor.

3. why bother with campaign promises or vows if you know you're going to break them? this becomes an issue of integrity and credibility if you can't keep your own word.

4. both obama and mccain don't have the foggiest idea what they're talking about when it comes down to nuts and bolts. i suspect they can't even talk about basic economic fundamentals without the aid of cheat sheets.

5. explore the alternatives. ask yourself why the media has virtually blacked out dissenting or alternative candidates. compare their experience, proposals and voting record with obama and mccain.

the two-party system is a fraud. by voting for another candidate (nader or ron paul write-in), you are sending a clear and distinct message to the electoral system and the media that the american people's intelligence should never be insulted with the dog and pony show they present every four years.

and let's get this straight. nader did not spoil the presidential election for al gore. al gore won the popular vote but failed to win the critical battle-ground states. most glaring is his own home state of tennessee. a bigger asterick was the fact that the election was illegally awarded to bush by political judges.

6. the consitution and our system of checks and balances is pretty clear and consistent. bush and company has repeatedly violated the public's trust. why not have the gumption or the balls to call out criminals for what they really are?

replies

1. You are much better versed on the act than I. I cannot speak for Obama's reason, however, I think with Obama as President there is a better chance for the act to be repealed, fairly amended or replaced than with McCain as President. Obama fought for the rights of people as a community organizer and he taught constitutional law. I assume from those actions that a persons fundamental rights are important to him

2. The primary weakness of Obama's campaign was his perceived lack of experience. Biden was brought in to address that. Our leader should be questioned and I find it refreshing that Obama didn't shy away from someone who has questioned his readiness. It's a far cry from the whatever your say, you're the decider sir! We've had for the past 8 years.

I don't know enough about the other, but I will say Biden wasn't my choice, or even in my top 5, however, I do understand why he was picked.

3. Keep your promise and probably lose, or break your promise and probably win (at that point no one really thought the GOP stood a chance). It's a tough call no doubt, but personally I'm giving him a pass on this one.

4. Agreed. And really, don't you think Obama would be better at picking qualified people to be his advisers than Bush, who just picked his best buddies? Yes, I know Bush is not McCain.

Bush's appointees were down right irresponsible, remember Harriet Myers? The GOP deserves to be punished for that and now that McCain picked Palin as his running mate...they really do think we're stupid.

5. I believe if you want to change the two party system, you have to start from the bottom up, not the top down. We elected an independent mayor in my city a few years ago. It took him two tries and a ton of grass roots effort to get there. At the mayoral, congressional and even governor levels you can get independents elected. Get enough of them elected and you'll have some real power behind them to get a strong independent Presidential candidate one day.

6. That would be nice.

elDizzle

re: replies

1. i would urge moby and his readership to pressure political leaders in this regard. historically, whatever the people gives the govn't, the govn't rarely ever gives back. our basic constitutional rights are inalienable. it should never ever be compromised. it was not the original intent of the framers.

this is why it's so puzzling to hear obama espouse his liberation theology leanings and civil rights given the fact that he voted for something as nefarious as the patriot act.

2. biden is a likable guy. he's someone you genuinely would like to watch a football game with over a few cold ones, despite his tendency to be a loose canon at times.

the point i was trying to underscore is that obama's advisors are from the very same group of elite "insiders" who are simulataneously supporting mccain.

in other words, i predict that whoever wins, the american people will get the same results in domestic and foreign policies.

for example:

we will likely increase our presence in oil rich countries such as columbia, venezuela, iran, central asia and the caspian sea.

we will continue to lose our rights and perhaps our sovereignty through back-door legislation (see Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership and Northcom). Most Canadians don't know this but they are living in a semi-colonial state right now.

the new president will likely introduce the "amero" currency.

more consolidation between bulge-bracket investment banks will take place until there's one uber-financial center that controls all aspects of finance. bear stearns and lehman were the first casualties. aig is next. morgan stanley will be bought out.

3. always, always stick with the principles no matter what. it's a slippery slope in politics.

4. bush's selection of cabinet executives and department heads were all predetermined. i believe the same of obama and mccain.

who decides?

the same grumpy old men hiding behind the curtains.

puppets of manchuria.

5. you are 100% correct! there's a reason why they call it grass-roots!

the two-party candidates don't represent the views of most americans nor do they represent the constitution based on their voting records, experience and policy proposals.

between a morally-bankrupt president and an inept congress, we have yet to hear real solutions to real everyday problems. rather, incumbents and candidates only care about elections and re-election (and the nice chunk of change from special interests).

about 60% of likely voters are independent or third-party affiliates. why allow the two prevailing parties to dictate our future when there are enough competent voices to challenge the machine?

why preemptively invade a sovereign country by pretending to install a "democracy" when we don't even practice a true democratic process here?

republicans and democrats don't have the answers to our problems because they created most of the problems we are in. only 25% of americans (generous number) are actually satisfied with the way things are going.

we need more dissenting and brave voices like ron paul (R)and henry waxman (D) in govn't.

suspend judgment. try to listen to what people like nader, bob barr, ron paul, chuck baldwin, cynthia mckinney (called out bush for the crook that he is before it became trendy to do so), etc. and compare them with obama and mccain.

as an analogy, moby can describe how difficult it is to land a record deal with a major label if the recording industry as a precondition is bent on only producing (manufacturing) homogenous, sterile bands that try to imitate the fashion of post-modern goth bands like the cure, joy division or bahaus when in reality they sound nothing like the real thing.

savvy listeners and long-time fans of moby "discovered" his music through "alternative sources". i discovered moby by partying one night at his very first dj residency inside a church in greenwich.

if americans truly want "change", they should consider all viable options and not the two-party quagmire that has gripped this country into a pattern of wars, bail-outs, corporate corruption, encroachment of constitutional rights, etc..

moby, the aclu and the patriot act

can obama supporters please answer these very simple questions (no insults or wild speculations, just answer the questions with substantiated facts or the very least a modicum of intelligent rejoinders):

1. after all the criticisms levied against the Patriot Act by many dissenting voices including obama, constitutional scholars and the aclu (which moby is a card-carrying member of), why did obama vote in favor (yes) of Patriot Act II given how distrustful and corrupt the Bush administration behaves? why would he give the government the legal authority to encroach on your privacy and violate your civil liberties?

2. if obama claims to be an agent of "change" as many of his own supporters believe, why would he align himself with "washington insiders" such as biden or worse, Zbigniew Brzezinski, the mastermind behind hawkish american policies (read up on his works if you want to be scared or pissed at what these grumpy old men are planning behind closed doors)?

3. after promising to abide by public financing limits for his campaign, why did obama renege on his original promise/vow?

4. during the recent market meltdown, obama lambasted the incumbents (though he didn't mention the "do nothing congress led by piosi") as the cause for the capitulation. why didn't he offer to re-engineer the market economy by calling out the Fed reserve for what it really is, a cabal or int'l bankers manipulating money supply for their own gain? if he believed he possessed the wisdom or the practical policies that would have curbed the credit crunch, why didn't he present it in a cogent and lucid paper instead of pandering to his base of "celebrities" in beverly hills on the same day a juggernaut investment bank collapsed?

5. if you agree that no candidates are perfect, why aquiesce to the two-party system of "the lesser of two evils" when you could simply vote for the best available candidate? if you truly believe dems and republicans are ideological opposites, you should examine u.s. policies within the last 50 years. It has not fluctuated between extremes.

6. in a sane rational world with justice as a high virtue, bush, cheney and his legion of neocon cronies would be in prison for various crimes against humanity and constitutional crimes that violate the public trust. most people here can agree on that. why is obama not even mentioning this in any of his speeches if he truly believes in "change" or "justice"? would he ask congress or the senate to open up an investigation (followed-up by an independent investigation) into the events surrounding 9/11 if he were elected President?

because

I believe the reason she opposed the rape kits is because of the inclusion of an emergency contraceptive. Nice eh?

She is the anti-feminist. Honestly. This is why it makes me so angry that any hillary clinton supporters or ANY woman could think of backing this woman when she has a horrible record of denying women rights and is running with a man just as guilty.

Oh! And there was a big rally of women in Alaska against Sarah Palin. About three or so pro-Sarah people showed up, I believe.

And a conservative talk show host there called all the women protesting Sarah “socialist baby-killing maggots”. How nice of him.
