oh no. for the third time, oh no. it's 2008, right?

oh no. for the third time, oh no.
it's 2008, right?
or is it? maybe it's 2000?
or 2004?
my confusion is based on the fact that the republicans are doing it again. they're using the same smear and attack
strategy on barack obama that they used on john kerry and that they used
on al gore.
and we, the democrats are doing...nothing?
sitting back and taking it like we always do?
sitting back and being the sissies that we always are?
in 2000 they slandered al gore as saying he invented the internet and was an elitist.
and he fought back how?
oh, that's right, he didn't.
and in 2004 they slandered john kerry by questioning his military service.
and he fought back how?
oh, that's right, he didn't.
and now they're slandering obama in a hundred insidious and incorrect ways
and he's fighting back how?
oh, that's right, he isn't.
if a bully kicks you in the shins once you should be prepared if he comes
to kick you in the shins again, right?
well, this is the third time that the gop are kicking us in the shins and we still
don't have shin-guards and we still haven't learned how to fight back.
that makes it our fault.
yes, in a perfect world the gop wouldn't be a bunch of lying sacks of shit, willing to spread scurrilous
lies and rumors, but, well, they are.
and we know they are.
and as distasteful as their methods might be, they usually end up winning.
and we're, once again, unprepared.
they're kicking us in the shins and all we're doing is quietly lamenting the fact that they're
kicking us in the shin.
dear senator obama: FIGHT BACK.
you're battling a dimwit who doesn't know the difference between sunni and shi'ite,
who still refers to countries that ceased to exist in 1993(czechoslovakia), and who believes
that iraq and pakistan share a border.
he's a media darling(appearing on 24, saturday night live, and the late night talk shows
more times than anyone can count).
and he's a staunch republican who deviates from the gop norm maybe .01% of the time.
so: FIGHT BACK.
we, the rank and file democrats, are tired of being sissies.
we're tired of the high road.
the high road would be great if it didn't lead us to defeat every 2 or 4 years.
the high road would be great if it helped us win.
guess what, it doesn't.
the republicans drag us into the mire and start beating the shit out of us and all we do is say,
'wouldn't it be nice if we weren't getting the shit beaten out of us in the mud?'
fight back and keep fighting until the gop are cowering in a corner.
we are better than them. we are smarter than them. we are younger than them.
and our ideas are better than theirs(stem cell research vs. creationism? we win).
we know how to win, it's almost as if we choose not to, somehow finding defeat
more comfortable and familiar and patrician than victory.
let's take the high road after we've won, ok?
in the meantime: FIGHT.
you don't bring a knife to a gun fight, and you don't bring decency to a fight with a republican(at least not if you want to win).
this might be a strange analogy for a vegan to use, but if you want to make an omelet
you have to break a couple of eggs.
start breaking some eggs.

Thanks

For saying something that needed to be said. And so succinctly. The first thing I'd lay into if I were part of Obama's campaign staff is this http://www.jordansays.com/2008/05/30/mccain-i-hate-gooks/
Sad, sad, sad.

CHILL

Obama has defeated the most formidable political machine that the Democratic Party has had in decades. McCain is going down the same dirty road that Hillary took. You know what happened to her campaign.

Obama has a plan to defeat McCain and will unroll it on his timetable, not on McCain's timetable.

Stop by http://narcosphere.narconews.com/thefield for some keen analysis of the campaign by Al Giordano.

why?

is it that you believe the democrats have to succumb to the g.o.p. level of hubris, dishonesty and sub-par I.Q.? i would rather support a candidate and a political party who/that would stand up for integrity. yes, we have been defeated twice (technically once), but looking at the big picture it's only eight years. if we do it earnestly, we can crush the g.o.p. modus operandi for good. why be so myopic? i'm your friend and i agree with your principals and understand your frustrations. i live here too in the city filled with intelligent and angry democrats that (foolishly) believed in the rest of america during the 2000 & 2004 elections. what happened to 'turning the other cheek'? what happened to you? cathy

sad sad day when I disagree

sad sad day when I disagree with moby :( however I do- I was hoping for better than the usual ugliness in politics; I was hoping for some honesty, for someone to stand against the special interests, against using people's fears to gain votes; not someone who will win an election only by selling his soul. I, and many others, am so disappointed in Obama for raising our hopes and then compromising himself as much as he already has- his comments on Israel/Jerusalem- so so disappointing, clearly trying to compensate and appease the ignorant rascist masses instead of honestly addressing the main issue in the continuing conflict- the continuing, growing illegal Israeli settlements. I have to disagree with the assesment that he should take the low road if that's what the republicans choose to do, because compromising his integrity destroys our hope for change, undermines his basic message.

election fraud as well as criminal libel

when al gore ran for president, despite the slander against him prior to the elections that you mention moby, he did incredibly well really.... up to a point. In fact he had actually won the election hadn't he, but due to election fraud the bush administration wormed it's way in. Now that's when al gore surely could have taken some action that he didn't take. I'm not an american citizen and I don't know as many of the details some people might, but I do recall seeing some footage of him stating that he strongly disagreed with the outcome of the election counts (or the misrepresentation of it by fox television that then got accepted as the truth) but that he accepted it. That's where he went wrong I believe. It is very well known around the world that the bush administration are guilty of election fraud and there have been very obvious signs of it, so what I don't understand is why they didn't get taken to court for it, or weren't in some other way held accountable and kicked out of the white house.

If republican politicians are lying about obama, he could lay charges of criminal libel against them. Since he is a public figure, slanderous lies made about him through the media is actually a criminal offense.

Are you actually a democratic party member moby? do you attend any of their meetings?

I really do hope that the john mccain doesn't worm his way in by election fraud. If the american government keeps going down the same track it has been on for the last x amount of years, life on earth could turn into a living hell (or dying hell as the case may be).

Even if obama does succeed in getting in, he'll have one hell of a mess to clean up and our planet in peril may already now be beyond repair. I still feel hopeful about him as president of the usa and what he might be able to achieve but I don't really know all that much about him. He may or may not really be as good as he seems but having him in the white house would certainly be much more of a hopeful situation than john mccain getting in.

I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE!!!!!

Thank you so much for writing this. I am a life long very, very, liberal (and proud of it) Democrat. I am old enough that I became politically aware when Nixon resigned to save his skin. So I am a little older that many of the people who probably comment on your political statements. I found you on the Huffington Post but in order to comment now I had to find your own website.

First to your NeoCon fans........just try to pay attention and open your mind for a minute and learn something. I have done so all my life and I have listened to Rush for years, I regularly turn to Fox News, and I am a big fan of George Will even though I disagree with almost everything he says.

Now to your fans with brains. Obama must fight dirty in order to win. Or at least fight hard and often. Now when I say dirty I don't mean to lie like McCain and the Republicans constantly do by lying and/or bending, melting and distorting the truth for their needs. Obama must respond immediately and loudly to every single bit of misinformation. They also must begin to attack first. Go after McCain's lack of character when it comes to his first wife. Have someone else question McCain's actions in Vietnam like they did with Kerry. Point out his lack of knowledge of international affairs. Highlight how McCain and his exceptionally wealthy wife and his party are the true elites! When did working hard and earning an exceptional education become a bad thing? Why does being intelligent make you elite? Is it because most Americans pride themselves on their narrow mindedness?

I went to college with Obama's wife. Michele is tough and she knows how to fight and fight hard. I understand how they feel like they can't go too hard so not to be labeled the angry black couple. But since Nixon got caught and Reagan got into office this country has lost its way. Money is the ONLY religion now. Before the country prided itself on being on the path to fulfilling the ideals of the Constitution. The programs of the GI bill and the progressive social programs of the 70's enabled my father to move from poverty to an uppper middle class lifestle as a scientist. If you haven't figured it out yet I am a Black woman and yes it does matter. He and my mother sent me to Princeton and my brother to Yale and Harvard med from a public high school. So don't try to tell me that Reagan made this country better. He and his movement ruined it.....maybe permanently.

The only way to save the American Dream is to save it for everyone. That takes an effective government to balance out the overwhelming power of money. But to get back to that balance the government has to be repaired by people who respect the power of the government to make things better by keeping the playing field fair. The only way to do that, is to get the Democrats back to full power over both the White House and the Congress. This will take fighting hard and long. Like the Republicans had a long term plan.....so should we.

Yes we are smarter, and nicer and Right! But sometimes to defeat a bully you have to be brave and get down in the dirt. Clinton taught us how to win. Now we have a better man to win with. A much better man.

Keep up the good fight Moby. And thank you so much for this. I'm sorry this is so long. I wish you could get your post out to the larger media like The Times or maybe.....The New Yorker? They owe us after that way too subtle cover. Most people are stupid. If this opinion makes me an elitist.....too bad, its the truth.

please excuse my duplicate comments

i don't mean for them to distract from smallerie's superb assessment of the situation.

beautifully stated, smallerie

i especially loved this part of your commentary: "highlight how mccain and his exceptionally wealthy wife and party are the true elites! when does being intelligent make you elite? is it because most americans pride themselves on their narrow mindedness?"

and

"most people are stupid. if this opinion makes me an elitist...too bad, it's the truth."

Don't forget...

...to add Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to that list of wimps. You can barely hear anything the overly soft spoken Reid has to say and Pelosi distracts you so much with her excessive blinking that it's hard to pay attention to what is coming out of her mouth. The Dems need a sonofabitch like Karl Rove, a master media manipulator to be sure (who will ultimately will burn in hell like the pigfucker that he is.) Let's hope Obama finds his balls soon before the GOP "swiftboat" him into also-ran status. Btw, Moby, have you ever been on Bill Mahr?

Why are the democrats such woosies?

Why are there only two powerful parties in the US?
Some questions...

A little too far... but still too close

However true, there is no clear, finite solution in this statement. i agree that the Democratic Party is unable to counter the array of deceitful attacks made by the GOP, but not for lack of effort to stick out and win this race. as a delegate for Barack Obama, i must say that i have seen a revolutionary turnout in political interest, (not that there shouldn't, considering the past 8 years) but i also acknowledge that it will take more than hope to win this election. and where the politicians have failed, i must ask that the unending effort of the hard working campaign volunteers be shown for the true force of the Democratic party. whereas the GOP is an entity of the few and powerful, it is the willful many who can overcome such obstacles. thank you for listening.

I kind of sadly agree with

I kind of sadly agree with sacred dignity's comment...
Although I'm not from the USA, but that's basically what I've always thought of most politicians... who are still alive.
They usually just whipe out the ones that don't fit in the plan.
Uh... the one's with the really good intentions, I mean.

i could not agree with you more...

which is why i am compelled to respond.
yet i also understand that senator obama doesn't want to alienate potential supporters who are as yet undecided by engaging in a negative campaign. he is walking on a thin line though, and if he doesn't demonstrate that he has the cojones to do battle with mccain's mud-slinging, he will be considered weak by those he needs to impress.
i share your intense frustration about the fact that the republicans have triumphed despite their reprehensible, dirty tactics. and i don't want to see the same outcome again either. that would make me lose faith in the entire political process of the US, since the republicans have not and never will represent my views(and obviously, not yours) or those of many other americans.

Yes! And they aren't even

Yes! And they aren't even launching INTELLIGENT attacks against him. Comparing him to Paris and Britney? How high-brow of them! Obama actually HAS ammunition against the republicans. Haven't they given us 8 years worth of stuff to attack them for? Stuff that is so well-known to us yet is just IGNORED by mainstream media? He really needs to step up his game. He has plenty to fight back with.

Surprise

I didn't expect to find two relatively GOP-apologist posts here. Well-

As a right-wing Moby fan, I'm sure that I represent a vast minority. I think the mud-slinging that goes on is fairly mutual for both parties, especially with the current presidential race. (McCain is such an easy target) What I really didn't like is this statement:

"We are better than them. We are smarter than them. We are younger than them. and our ideas are better than theirs...."

I don't think that you (Moby) typically represent what I think of when I think of arrogant liberalism- but this is an example of exactly what I think most liberals (democrats) in the country believe deep-down. Especially those in the Northeast. As a Texan who has lived in Brooklyn for awhile I have experienced this almost daily.

I recognize that this quote may be somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the majority of the entry is written in an earnest and disgusted tone. Thus- I would assume that you aren't really being funny, but honest. For there to really be any harmony between the parties and beliefs in this country we have to rid ourselves of the tendency to lapse into a superiority complex- on both sides. Stereotypes are largely what serve to create "sides" to begin with!

It makes ME mad to read these things on this site- I guess I just expect more. there are plenty of intelligent, altruistic, compassionate conservatives- we are perhaps the most poorly represented group in the U.S. We all want progress- and taking the high road is ALWAYS the best way to achieve that. Stooping to low-level tactics for the sake of an ideology serves only to discredit that ideology at it's most basic level. If I am opposed to liberalism a post like this only serves to push me further from the idea that liberals (democrats) in this country truly have good motives at heart.

Manchurian Puppets...

While I agree with your frustrations over the mud-slinging and dirty politics that are commonplace in presidential elections, I believe your objections against the GOP are misguided.

The real target of your concern should be the Grumpy Old Men who pull all the strings in the world. They shape policies and contrive political events to further their own wealth and power.

Who are they?

The same elites with influence, power and wealth who have permanent memberships in shadowy organizations such as the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Affairs and the Bilderberg Group.

Do enough digging and you will be shocked and appalled at how many people are duped by their tactics of disinformation.

Their intentions are sinister and any ambitous political candidate seeking office must meet their approval. They are bi-partisan but secretly, they are cloaked with totalitarian plans.

In 1991, no one believed a white trash governor from Arkansas could ever take the oval office. Most people never even heard of him back then. Conincidentally, he met with senior Bilderbger members that same year, followed by more clandestine meetings in Moscow to ensure full compliance.

This is true but no one with serious influence or power would dare risk their careers or lives by...telling the truth about everything.

At the end of the day, Obama and McCain are merely puppets, political yes-men and tools for a nefarious organization.

yeah...

if he loses, he will lose entirely on account of his own idiocy and inexperience, his preoccupation with platitudes, and his inability to answer a single tough question to anyone's satisfaction. i'd be a tad more concerned with things like his idea on how to solve our so-called "energy crisis." just fill up your tires, man. you know? man?

insidious and incorrect? slander?
hardly.
