Thanks for coming to the kcrw show on thursday night.
Thanks for coming to the kcrw show on thursday night.
I had such a good time, and its really rare to be able to play such a completely eclectic set.
And thanks to nic harcourt and everyone at kcrw.
It was really fun.
Now I'm sitting in lax, getting ready to fly to chicago.
I'm reading u.s news and world report(which is usually a hardcore right wing news magazine)because the have a bunch of articles about 'the future'. And I'm a nerd and I like articles about 'the future'.
One quote that surprised me, bearing in mind the u.s news and world report is right-wing, 'it would make sense for the whole world to become vegetarian: a plant based diet is more healthful, more economical, and more environmentally benign.'
Huh, I agree, of course, but I didn't expect to find such a rational statement of support for vegetarianims in right wing us news and world report.
Again, huh.
Ok, off to chicago now while styx is playing on the starbucks stereo system. Good ole styx.
Have a good weekend,
Moby

and in appreciation of the good things...
...like you
I'd very much love to be able to be there at a dj set of yours someday. I haven't yet, but I can imagine how awesome you'd be and dancing is one of my most favourite of all things in all the world to do.
And I do really appreciate that Ching Hai and her organisation are putting so much effort into trying to alert people to the urgency of the climate change situation and are so strongly advocating vegetarianism, I just think that some of the dogma she is attaching to her material is really counter-productive.
I do also appreciate that caring a lot for animals and being vegan is very good karma and in the future, some of the people who really do love and care about the earth may indeed find themselves having better luck for survival than those who don't, although something like an extra intense heat wave that is not survivable would of course, get the vegans and vegetarians as well.
I really appreciate how much you care about animals moby.
Yay for veg*nism. It makes
Yay for veg*nism. It makes sense, so sooner or later, people kind of have to notice.
Lollapalooza After-party in Chicago
Great set in Chicago! Was hoping to hear more of your own tunes, but we danced like mad right above you on the balcony! Thanks for coming to Chicago! Some crazy girls ran up to me telling me they accidentally walked into your group in the green room. You certainly made those nutty girls happy - they won't recover for months!

who is the most weird out of me and you?
I wonder.
In case you are wondering... what got me into the rant below... well it I guess I could say it partly goes back to a great feeling of disappointment I had about 15-20 years ago when it began to look like the revolution I'd been so looking forward to (a non-violent revolution that is) wasn't going to happen because so many people who might otherwise have been interested were just tripping out on the notion that we can all kick back, think lovely thoughts and "create our own reality" or be nice and kind to everyone and let karma carry on ruling the world... which was not only disappointing, but also quite disturbing... while already it was looking like the earth might die if we didn't hurry up and get our shit together... people by the millions were instead getting all deluded by extremist, fundamentalist (though ever so fashionable) ideologies that didn't look to me like they were going to help. 20 years later, I get a flyer through the mail created by a "spiritual master" who is very concerned about the climate change situation and tells us that if we don't hurry up and take action, we will all be dead by the end of 2012 as masses of poisonous methane is released into the atmosphere after being released from under clathrates melted by the warming oceans. At first it seems like she might just be smart enough to really have an impact out there and she says that we could turn the situation around in 60 days. She has a website - www.suprememastertv.com - with links to good articles and scientific information etc and she spends millions of her own dollars trying to alert the general population to the urgency of the situation. Meanwhile I find out that Jaques Cousteau predicted a couple of decades ago that our oceans might have died (from pollution he thought) by as early as 2010 and then we would run out of oxygen to breath because we depend to a fair extent, for air, upon the plankton of the oceans.... and I've just recently found out that our oceans do now have about 200 dead zones, with no marine life at all... some of those zones being very very large... being caused (if I remember rightly) by the warming of the oceans causing some kind of toxic gas to be released from the ocean floor which kills off everything in it's vicinity.
I hope you don't feel soul crushing despair when you are next alone in a hotel room moby.... (they say there is oodles of proof of life after death which is something hey?)...
Anyway, I then find out that this "spiritual master" thinks that the reason people die in wars such as the one in iraq is becuase of having bad karma from eating meat, and promises if only meat eaters change their diet, (and illiminate the bad karma), then we won't have to die (although I do believe that fossil fuels also have something to do with the climate change situation)... as if climate change and wars are really orchestrated by some supernatural force that ensures people get their own back (after having clocked up bad karma from eating meat etc)....
.... so now all those millions of people tripping out on the notion that we can all kick back and "create our own reality" or be nice and kind and just keep on letting karma rule the world might be all the more convinced that all it takes is to be sure not do bad things (like eating animals) and everything will be alright...
I know if everyone went vegetarian, we'd be one step closer to securing a more sustainable future, but that alone is no where near enough to save us... we are going need to change quite a bit more than our agricultural practices to pull through this one!!!!
so this is like me silently screaming

Of course...
...a week of so after i leave L.A. you play the KCRW gig. Grr. At least I caught your awesome gig out here last month. Yay! Anyway, I like to read the right-wing mags sometimes because I just can't believe the shit they try to sell. It's like trying to figure why I watch Bill O'Reilly sometimes. I usually get so pissed off that I'm ready to pull an Elvis on the t.v., lol. But I agree, ending meat consumption would save the world. But as Kurt Cobain said, "I eat cow, I am not proud..."

wishing for a day and age when human beings become sane
When we reply to existing comments on here, do they register as new comments? I'm writing this in the new comment box anyway. Hopefully I'm not confusing anyone, as this is a continuation my other comment here (below), which was possibly left a bit too open to misinterpretation. Here are some quotes from "supreme master" Ching Hai -
"Karma means "As you sow, so you shall reap." If you kill, you will get killed, that is the meaning of karma. If we hit someone, later we will get beaten. That is called karma."
"Meat is the cause of all the wars and suffering in this world, as well as in your personal self. To refrain from meat is to contribute to peace on this planet. If we terminate the cause of killing, we will not reap the result of being killed or being wounded."
I'm not sure why making such enormous assumptions is considered an enlightened thing to do. Doesn't she make it sound like vegetarians and vegans will be spared from dying of the cataclysmic climate changes that she herself says we might all die from as soon as the year 2012? I would have thought that if things more or less carry on as they are, and climate changes make it difficult for humans (and most other species) to survive on this planet, that vegetarians and vegans would be also vulnerable to the results of the same climate changes as everyone else. Of course a major change in the eating habits and agricultural practices of many people around the world could possibly avert catastrophic climate changes and would certainly help, but to suggest that vegetarians and vegans with the good karma that comes from not eating meat would be able to survive climate changes that meat eaters won't survive is utterly ridiculous. I find it hard to understand how someone who strikes me as being so simple minded gets to have the title of "supreme master" and "spiritual teacher" and even be awarded the United States "World Spiritual Leadership Award" in 1993 and 1994. I mean I know that we tend towards being mentally unbalanced as a species, but I wouldn't have thought that many people would accept that kind of "logic" as being altogether sane. I think it would be good if those people who get honoured as great spiritual teachers could at least display signs of being completely sane and not be perpetrating delusional, simple minded concepts like the one about people with good karma being immune to being killed in wars or by harsh consequences of climate changes.
Excuse me for offloading my frustrations about this here. at least there is a bit of a link between the subject of my comment here and your journal entry moby. of course it also links with things I was writing about a bit earlier on after you saw the dalai lama. I hope you don't believe that karma works in such a simplistic "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" kind of way. imo it's a real offence to assume that people who get killed in wars or by natural disasters or whatever must have bad karma, and a dangerous assumption for anyone to make, that people with good karma could be spared from the consequences of climate change.
maybe even right-wing people would like to keep life going
maybe word is spreading throughout right wing networks that the situation we are in environmentally is rather dire and that agricultural practices which support meat eating are a major contributing factor. well having even right-wing people wanting life on earth to continue can't be a bad thing.
I came across some information on climate change put out by a woman who considers herself to be a fully enlightened spiritual master. she is strongly advocating vegetarianism as a solution to the problem. I requested further information from her organisation and in a leaflet that came through the mail, she talked about how the killing of animals for meat eating is the bad karma behind the climate change sitaution as well as all the wars and suffering in the world. Apparently, according to her the killing of animals results in people getting killed later (due to bad karma), and that in choosing not to kill animals we won't be killed ourselves. huh. so I guess that means if all the artic ice melts and the seas warm up and the large amounts of methane stored in (or under) the clathrates in the oceans gets released which could (according to Ching Hai the supreme master) be enough methane to kill off most of us, that the vegetarians and vegans (who have good karma), will be able to survive? what a nice comforting thought for any vegans or vegetarians who believe that is how karma works.... at least untill the point in time when climate change really hits and it becomes apparent that probably isn't quite how karma works. gee I wonder where or who ching hai's title of "supreme master" came from.
Still I'm very glad to hear that even some right-wing people are advocating vegetarianism... although there have probably always been right-wing vegetarians out there.
us news and world report
us news and world report hasn't been so conservative lately, i have noticed. my parents tell me that they used to call it useless news and world distort.
