hi, and happy new year. well, happy western-y new year.

i guess for the vast majority of people on the planet it's not new year. like, well, the chinese and indians (that's 2,000,000,000 people right there). and the muslims and the jews. and a lot of others, as well. but for the billion or so people for whom wednesday night was new years eve, and for whom thursday is new years day: happy new year.

i dj'ed at a big rave in downtown l.a, and it was really, really fun. if you were there: thanks for coming. here's a picture taken with my blackberry of my 15,000 new friends at 5 minutes past midnight .

it looks vaguely as if we're in the belly of a giant whale, or perhaps a big inflatable space ship. my next dj'ing gig(s) will be in d.c for inauguration week. i don't know details yet, but i'll let you know as soon as i know. and now i'm going to go to bed, lulled to sleep by the dulcet tones of coke-fuelled drunks yelling at each other on the streets of hollywood. goodnight, and happy 2009.

the economy might be in the toilet, but we have a new president-elect and there are about a trillion things for which we can each hopefully be thankful and grateful. i hope you had a great new years eve and i hope that 2009 ends up being a fantastic year for you.

is there another country on the planet...

is there another country on the planet where new years eve can either involve being buried under 4 feet of snow or going to the beach to lie in the sun?

the u.s is so odd in that in the winter people can freeze to death and in the summer people can be killed by the heat, but yet there are places in the middle of winter that are warm and tropical while there are other places in the middle of winter that are buried under 15 feet of snow.

i realized that people in most countries tend to have the same experience of WINTER. and the same experience of SUMMER.

today i was having lunch at real food daily in l.a and i had to get out of the sun because it was too hot. at the same time some friends of mine were in nyc refusing to go outside because it was too freezing.

america is the country of opposites. we have the fattest people, but yet we also have the highest percentage of people who go to gyms and eat health food. we have some of the most ignorant people on the planet, but we also have the highest percentage of nobel prize winners. we are puritanical and won't let nudity be shown on network tv, but yet we have the worlds largest porn industry. we have beaches on january 1st that are covered in snow and ice, but yet we have other beaches on january 1st that are covered with sun bathers and surfers. what a nutty country, no wonder we're all a little touched in the head.

tomorrow i'm flying back to the ice and sleet and cold and snow of nyc. but for today i'm going to walk outside in my bad brains t-shirt and enjoy being just a little bit too warm.

happy new years,

merry almost christmas.

merry almost christmas.

as i write this it's 7pm in nyc and i was just watching the news and there was a story about how thousands and thousands of people are stranded in airports and train and bus stations. oof, that's terrible. being stranded in o'hare and having sbarro for breakfast, lunch, and dinner sounds awful at the best of times, but during the holidays?

again: oof. but on a happier note, i hope that you're somewhere nice with people you like, and i hope that you're lucky and that you're not stranded in an airport or bus station.

i'm in chinatown for christmas, and it's a bit disconcerting, as chinatown on december 24th and 25th is exactly the same as chinatown on december 23rd and 26th. tomorrow for christmas i'm going to go for a long walk through chinatown, maybe getting vegan dim sum before heading to work at my studio. the early christmas gift from the weather gods (weather sounds less mundane when it's the province of the gods) is that it's bizarrely warm in nyc. i'm sure it's just a momentary reprieve, but tonight is 60 degrees, as opposed to 2 days ago when it was -10 with wind chill.

ok, happy holidays, merry christmas, happy channukah, happy kwanzaa, happy saturnalia.

happy channukah

oh!
sorry i'm 2 1/2 days late...but happy channukah!
here's a menorah(improperly lit...sorry)on the block in the lower east side that saw the largest influx of jewish immigrants
in the 19th century.
happy channukah!
